How to Make Your Own Bagels

Bagels, deliciously dense and chewy, are a popular food around the world. Their history goes back hundreds of years, with written records of them going back as far as 1610.

While there are several theories as to their origins, one of the most popular goes back as far as the 17th century with the birth of the bagel taking place in Vienna. It is said that a Viennese baker wanted to honor King John Sobieski for his victory in the Battle Of Vienna which was fought against the Ottoman Empire.

The baker shaped his dough into a circle that looked like a stirrup as the King was well known for his love of horses, and it was called “beugel” which means stirrup in German.

In medieval Poland bagels were believed to have magical powers due to their round shape. It was believed that the round shape brought good luck and long life. So much so, that it ordered in the city of Krakow, Poland that bagels be given as a  gift to all women after childbirth.

However bagels came to be they’re delicious! There’s nothing like a warm fresh bagel right out of the oven. Bagels are traditionally made with a yeast dough which is first boiled and then baked, creating a wonderfully dense and doughy interior with a nice crispy exterior. Different toppings are added before baking such as sesame seeds and poppy seeds. 

If you can’t get a great bagel where you are, or just want something super fresh and absolutey delicious try making your own. They’re fairly easy to make and while it may take a little time it’s well worth it! The recipe posted above is a great starter recipe and it makes some incredible Bagels.
