These cute and delicious Christmas Logs are just something I saw in a reel on Instagram. They looked really cute and easy to do so I thought I would give them a go!
I like simple things like this. I wish I had had the internet when my children were younger because things like this would have been really fun to make for their school parties and holiday get-togethers. Simple things that don’t take a lot of effort or time.
These would be quick and easy to put together for any get together and they use really simple things. I put them together in a flash and they ended up being really cute, cute, cute.
This is the reel on Instagram, from a person called Rachel Anderson, Created at Home. You can see the reel here. It might help to have a look at it before you make them.
Basically this is all you need to make the logs. Not a lot of ingredients. I adapted them to what I had in the house. I really only had to buy the chocolate Swiss Rolls.
- Chocolate covered Swiss roll cakes (log bases)
- Red and Green Gumdrops (holly leaves and toadstool tops)
- White Mini Marshmallows (toadstool stems)
- Melted Chocolate Chips ( to help the things stick, etc.)
- Some kind of Red Sprinkles (for holly berries)
That is basically it. I would have liked to put some white dots on the toadstool tops and you certainly could if you wanted to, but I didn’t have what I needed to do that.
White dotted red toadstools are my favorite thing!
When I was living in the U.K. I made myself an Alice Shadow Box, complete with red and white toadstool. I made everything in the box from old books and pap. Even the dress was Paper Mache. The shoes also. I even made a little Mad Hatter’s hat from Paper Mache, which you can see down in the left hand corner.
I like being creative. I don’t know what happened to it when I left. I hope it went to a good home.
I more or less have outlined the steps taken here to make the Holly Logs. Just lop off a thin slice on either end of the chocolate cakes. Have ready some melted chocolate.
Cut the green gumdrops into slices. Put a dab of chocolate in the middle of the log. Add the green leaves and some red berries. I had some heart shaped cake sprinkles and I had reddish large dragees. I divided them up and used some of each.
I dusted them with some icing sugar to pretty everything up. I think I liked the both equally.
I began the toadstool in the same way, by lopping off a thin slice at either end of the cakes. I then used a healthy dollop of melted chocolate and lay it on top and then dragged a fork through it to make it look a bit like bark.
Green gumdrops were cut in half for the tops of the toadstools and mini marshmallows for the bottoms. I applied these on top of the bark and then sprinkled some green sprinkles around to look like moss.
Simple but very effective.
White dots on the toadstools or not, I think these turned out to be really cute. I am taking them over to my daughter and her husband for them to enjoy. I hope that they like them!
I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t!
I had been wanting to take my sister out for lunch to the Farmer’s Family Diner before they closed on the 24th of December. (They will open again on March 21st) It is a little out of the way diner in back of Aylesford here in Nova Scotia, just down the road from the Oaklawn Zoo.
It is one of my favorite places to eat. We don’t go very often, but whenever I have gone I have been amazed with the food we have ordered. It always arrives hot and well prepared. They may not be the cheapest place to eat, but at the end of the day you get what you pay for and I don’t mind paying a bit more if what I get is going to be delicious!
All of their food is homemade and from scratch, except maybe the fries. But they make all of their own bread, and coleslaw from scratch. Roast Dinners, etc. One item on the menu is the Colossal Club Sandwich. This is a photo of it in it’s entirety. I don’t know how anyone can eat a whole one of those!
Good thing they also offer to split it up onto two places so people can share! This is what my sister and I did along with a piece of pie each for dessert!
This was the half sandwich. Three slices of homemade whole wheat bread (our choice, you could have white), layered with lettuce, cheese, crisp bacon, tomatoes and real roasted turkey. Plus mayonnaise.
Look at how many fries came with it! And some of that delicious homemade coleslaw. I love coleslaw. It is my favorite salad and theirs is really good!
That was some mess of fries! There was just as much on each plate. There is no way we could eat them all. I brought the extras home in a cardboard container and will enjoy them for breakfast in the morning. (Don’t judge, lol Yes, I like cold fries. Salted.)
But that’s not where it ends . . .
This was the blueberry pie. A huge piece, and made with fresh Nova Scotia Wild Blueberries. Not the cultivated berries. The wild ones have way more flavor!
Their pie is not too sweet, not too tart. A bit of sugar sprinkled on top of that flaky pastry. This is one tasty blueberry pie.
Cindy had a slice of the Coconut Cream Pie. We each had a taste of each other’s pie and I can tell you the Coconut Cream Pie was gorgeous. Next to my mom’s, the best coconut cream pie ever!
Sorry for the bad phone photos.
Bad photos or not we could not resist sending one to my brother in Ottawa rubbing it in. He was jealous. We will have to take him there next summer if he comes home. We had planned on it this year but never got around to it.
Anyways I couldn’t resist sharing a little glimpse of some of what I get up to around here with you all! I thought you might enjoy it! I will be back tomorrow with another tasty recipe for you to make! See you then!
