Morning Orange Drink

Morning Orange Drink
I had some frozen orange juice concentrate in my refrigerator that I had bought for when my family last visited from New Brunswick.  I wanted to use it up.
I thought to use some of it in a chicken dish, and then I happened upon this recipe for refreshing looking morning orange drink that looked very promising and decided I could use some of it to make that as well!

Morning Orange Drink
This recipe came from a cooking magazine I had purchased at the grocery store a while back. It was put out by Taste of Home and was entitled, Copycat Recipes.  The original recipe was attributed to a lady named Joyce Mummau from Mount Airy, Maryland in the U.S.A.
It looked really light and refreshing. I expect it would be especially so in the summertime, but even now, when we are still in the throes of winter, it is still delicious and refreshing.

Morning Orange Drink
I did cut the recipe back to make only one drink. The original recipe made 6 servings. You could easily amp the amounts up to make more than one drink. One drink was just right for me here on my own.
I loved that it used simple ingredients. I loved that it went together really quickly. I loved that one serving (3/4 cup) only had 115 calories, which seemed quite reasonable to me.  If you wanted to you could leave out the tsp of sugar and the calorie and sugar count would be even less.
One sip of this and I was back at the Mall.  If anything, this was even more delicious!  Do they still have Orange Julius Stands?  I wonder?
Just checked and there are four locations here in the Province of Nova Scotia. None near me. Not a problem because I can now make this tasty drink whenever I want, and in the comfort of my own home and at a fraction of the cost of a real one!
Morning Orange Drink
Do you remember years ago when they used to have Orange Julius Booths in the food courts at the malls, especially in the larger cities.  I could never really afford to buy one, but I did treat myself to one once and it was so delicious, the flavor of it has stayed in my taste memory bank ever since.
I thought this refreshing drink tasted very much like that!  It was rich and frothy and creamy too.  The orange flavor was beautiful.  I could easily enjoy one of these every day, no kidding!

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE MORNING ORANGE DRINK
Simple ingredients, and not a lot of them. This is for one drink. Multiply the amounts to serve more people. Very easily done.
  • 1 ounce (1/8 cup/28g) frozen orange juice concentrate
  • 1/8 cup (30ml) cold water
  • 1/8 cup (30ml) whole milk
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large ice cubes

Morning Orange Drink
Frozen Orange Juice Concentrate is not something which is readily available in the U.K. They have something which is known as fruit squash, which comes in plastic bottles and which you can buy right of the shelves.
In the U.K. I would use an orange squash, one containing real juice, or a barley drink, again containing real orange juice, undiluted.
Don’t be tempted to use lower fat milk. You will not get the same rich and frothy result as you do from using whole milk.
If all you have are small ice cubes, you may want to double the amount.  You can play it by ear.  You want a drink that is rich and frothy and not too watered down.

HOW TO MAKE MORNING ORANGE DRINK
Seriously nothing could be easier, or more delicious. You do need a blender or a smoothie maker.

Combine the orange juice concentrate, water, milk, sugar and vanilla in a blender or smoothie maker. Blend or process at high speed.

Add the ice cubes, and blend again until smooth and frothy. Serve immediately with or without a straw! Delicious!

This was incredibly delicious and refreshing.  It was nice and creamy, frothy.  I was really happy with it. It reminded me very much of the Orange Julius drinks we used to be able to get in the mall years ago.
If you want to make more, simply multiply the ingredients by the number of servings you wish to make.  Obviously the more you make you will need to make it in a blender rather than a smoothie maker as a smoothie maker won’t hold that much.
I would make this again and have plans to make a full recipe when my grandsons are next over. I know they will love this beautifully refreshing drink!

Here are some other tasty breakfast options that I don’t think anyone will be able to turn down.  They do have fruit in common. You decide which fruit you like or use what you have on hand!

BREAKFAST KNICKERBOCKER GLORY - Traditionally a Knickerbocker Glory is a  layered cream sundae that is served in a large tall conical glass to be eaten with a distinctive long spoon. A dessert peculiar to the British Isles. This is a breakfast version, with fresh fruit, creamy Greek or frozen yogurt and crunchy granola, layered in a tall glass and drizzled with some honey.  I have never had anyone turn down one of these delightful breakfast options!

BREAKFAST BATTER PUDDINGSThese things are amazing!  I think they are known by all sorts of other names, such as Dutch Babies, German Pancakes, etc. . . . but they’re batter puddings to me.  This version is baked in individual ramekins and served with some fruit on top. You could use cherry pie filling, lemon curd, fresh berries, jam, etc. All are delicious!
