Don't Go Out Alone, Swedish Women Warned

Police in the Swedish city of Uppsala have warned women to walk in groups and to ‘think how to behave,’ after four women were raped in as many days.

A sleepy college town of 170,000 people, Uppsala is more usually known for its universities and cathedral than for violent crime. However, police are investigating a series of sex crimes in recent days.

Two rapes took place last weekend, with another attempted rape on Saturday night, and another sexual attack in the early hours of Wednesday morning. All four attacks took place at night, and all four victims were walking alone. Police are treating the incidents as unconnected and no descriptions (no surprises) of the suspects have been released. Are we really expected to believe that multiple victims are clueless as to the ethnicity of their rapists?)

Police did, however, release a warning. Not to any would-be rapists, but to their potential victims. “Women in town should not be worried, but must think how to behave,” the city’s police force said in a statement to newspaper Expressen.

“Feel free to walk on illuminated streets and not alone in alleys or parks,” they continued, adding that because officers “cannot be in all places, both men and women have to think ahead.”

Similar advice to women in Uppsala has been criticized before. When four out of five schoolgirls said they felt unsafe outdoors in the city earlier this year, women’s rights groups called for a greater police presence on the streets, instead of security advice to potential victims.

Sweden’s rape count has been rising since 2005 and between 2005 and 2017, rapes nearly doubled and sexual molestation incidents more than doubled.

About 58% of men convicted in Sweden of rape and attempted rape over the past five years were born abroad, a Swedish broadcaster has reported. Swedish broadcaster SVT reviewed all the 843 guilty verdicts in cases involving rape or attempted rape that occurred in the country since 2013 as part of its research.

Despite their liberal-left education, Its journalists were forced to reveal that 58 percent of those convicted were born outside the country, while almost 40 percent were migrants from the Middle East and Africa. Besides, over eight out of 10 men convicted of rape in cases where the perpetrator was unknown to the victim were born abroad, according to STV. 

Asylum seekers from Afghanistan topped the chart of foreigners sentenced for rape crimes, as 45 of the 843 migrants from the country were convicted in Sweden. The sexual assault convicts were also described as people with a low level of education, a third of whom had a pre-existing criminal history. According to the broadcaster, many of the perpetrators were under the influence of drugs or alcohol when they raped or attempted to rape their victims.

Since the peak of the migrant crisis in 2015 when Sweden took in around 160,000 asylum seekers, crime associated with the new arrivals and their inability to accept European values have been a hot topic in the country.

Following the release of the report, the anti-migrant Sweden Democrats Party said that foreigners guilty of rape should be swiftly deported. The party is currently polling at 19 percent, according to Ipsos, and is looking to record its best-ever result in the forthcoming election on September 9.

The head of the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo says that his company struggles to attract foreign specialists due to the lack of public security and may be considering moving elsewhere. A new report from the Swedish police lists eight additional areas as being “especially vulnerable,” where it is more difficult for law enforcement and other emergency services to do their job.
