FEDS Indict Lil’ Wayne on Charges of Gun Possession, Rapper Faces 5-10 Years in Prison

U.S. government prosecutors have charged one of America’s most popular rap stars with a felony case, which began with a search of the artist’s private jet late last year.

TMZ reported on Tuesday morning (November 17) that Young Money CEO Lil’ Wayne (pictured) has been federally indicted on firearm-related charges in the state of Florida. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida has charged the rapper (born DeWayne Carter) with one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.

In December 2019, Wayne’s private jet was stopped by the feds at Miami’s Opa Locka Executive Airport before the former Hot Boys member was about to fly to California. After federal agents converged on the Gulfstream G jet to conduct a search, they found cocaine, ammunition, and a firearm. Initially, Wayne’s lawyers denied their client owned the contraband.

“There is no allegation that he ever fired it, brandished it, used it or threatened to use it. There is no allegation that he is a dangerous person.  The charge is that because he was convicted of a felony in the past, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm,” said Wayne’s lawyer Howard Srebnick, according to HipHopDx.

Srebnick also said that his client was officially cleared by agents to leave after they conducted their search, DX reports.

The FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Miami-Dade police officers, and members of other bureaus participated in the December 2019 raid, which connected Wayne to his current federal indictment.

“Following the search, three law enforcement sources told the Miami Herald federal agents received a tip about drugs possibly being transported and were working on securing a search warrant from a Miami federal judge, which was evidently authorized,” reads the DX report, which was also published on Tuesday morning (November 17).

The U.S. government takes its “one will get you five” gun law for felons very seriously. If convicted, Wayne could wind up with anywhere from five to 10 years in federal prison.
