AND THE STOCKINGS WERE HUNG

Christmas decorations down from the attic…check.  Tree…check.  Decorations put up…check.  What’s missing?  For some reason my mantle looks so bare.  It just doesn’t shout CHRISTMAS!  Hmmmmm……it didn’t shout Christmas until I saw this adorable sign at the Christmas Market this weekend.  Of course, I wasn’t about to pay $45.00 for a sign I could just as easily make.  So, to the scrap wood pile I went.  I came back with this piece of crown molding that previously lived in the horrendous box light above our kitchen island.
This is what the back of the board looked like.  You can see it still has the finishing nails.  All you need to do to remove them is gently hammer them back through the board.  If they are still stuck you can pull them out with pliers.  Easy peasy.
One coat of Gesso, to act as a primer, later and the back of the board looked like this.
Next came the red paint.

I used just inexpensive craft paint.  And by inexpensive, I mean the cheapest you can buy.  As a result I had to put 3 coats of it on to provide full coverage.  It’s funny.  I had three bottles of the exact same red craft paint, yet they were all different shades of red.  Like I said – inexpensive.

Next, I printed out the words that I wanted to paint on the sign.  I transferred the words to my sign.

Once the letters were transferred, I painted them in with white craft paint.  Again, it took two coats.  You can buy better craft paint that will require only one coat but I love to paint.  I find it so calming – so, two coats is fine with me.

Next, I went over the entire sign with the trusty, dusty sander.  I only like my diamonds bright and shiny!  Once the sign was sanded to my liking, I took three nails and nailed them into the bottom of the board.  I took my pliers and bent them up into a “V” shape.  Presto – instant hooks for the stockings.  Here is what the sign looked like hanging on the mantle.

Still, something was missing.  It still wasn’t screaming Christmas.  It wasn’t even whispering.  Ok – well may whispering but barely.  I was trying to do something different this year and match the “greenery” to my living room.  But for one – I had to little and for another it looked more Thanksgiving-ish than Christmas.  So, I went back to my boxes of decorations and found an extra strand of greenery that I had left over from the stairs.  I also corralled a few Christmas trees from another area of the house.  Here is another “BEFORE” and now the “AFTER”.

Hope your holiday decorating is going as well!  Take care.
xoxo,
Susan
