Large Poseable Mummy

Some of you might remember these miniature mummy’s that I made last year for Halloween. You can read that post here.

This year I decided to create a mummy that was a little more life size. Isn’t he just adorable?

To make the mummy I used pretty much the same process I used for the smaller mummies only I increased the scale. For this project you will need:

- Cheese Cloth (I bought mine at Walmart in the sewing notions section for about $5.00

- Wire coat hangers

- Elmer’s Glue

- Tape (I used painters tape becausee that is what was on hand).

- Batting or stuffing to add some heft to the mummy.

The first step is to unhook your wire hangers. I think I finally ended up using 4 hangers. 2 for the head, neck and body, 1 for the arms and 1 for the legs.

Next, using the wire hanger form a circle the size of the mummy’s head that you want. I used half the hanger to make the first circle.

Then make another circle with the remaining hanger.

I used wire cutters to help me manipulate the wire. Once you have the two circles made it should take on the shape of a head.

Take another wire hanger and create the neck for the mummy and the arms. Curl the hanger at the ends to form hands. I ended up making the neck on my mummy shorter than the one in the picture. It just looked weird to me so I shortened it a bit.

Next add the body and the legs using more wire. Curl the end of the wire to create two feet. Once I had the basic body of the mummy formed I covered the head, hands, chest, body and feet with tape to prevent the cheese cloth from snagging on the wire. (Yes, I learned this the hard way).

Now that you have the body of the mummy formed it is time to start wrapping your mummy. I cut my cheese cloth into strips that were manageable for wrapping the mummy.

I used the batting on the head, arms, body and legs and then wrapped the cheese clothe over the batting. I just helped to give the mummy more bulk and helped me to use less cheese cloth. I used Elmer’s glue to secure the ends of each strip of cheese cloth.

Here is what the final product looked like. YUK! I hated it. The eyes and mouth make it look like a ghost and the neck is way too long. So, I removed the cheese cloth from the head that had the eyes and mouth on it. I just unwrapped it until I could no longer see the eyes and mouth. Next, I had to cut the neck to shorten it (as I mentioned above). Once I cut the neck, I used more wire to secure it to the head and the body again. Then I re-wrapped the neck.

Here is the final out come. I think the mummy turned out adorable. It was a challenge to create the larger mummy but I think it was worth it in the end. Hope you like it! Have a great day!
