When The Ghosts Come Out, Late At Night...

I am in full Halloween mode.  I just love, love, love Halloween!  When we moved from Houston to Atlanta and I cleaned out the infamous skeltons in my closet (you can read that post here), I got rid of a lot of my Halloween decorations.  It was time for a lot of them to be put out to pasture so to speak.  Now that we are settled here in Atlanta and we are having the first hints of fall, I am dying to decorate for Halloween.  I’ve been busy making a lot of my own Halloween decorations.  I got rid of my old ghosts with the closet clean out and so it’s time to make some new ones!
For this project you will need:
     - balloons
     - Elmer’s Glue
     - water
     - newspaper
     - scissors
     - a large mouth cup or jar
     - glue (I used E6000)
     - cup hooks
     - spray sealer
To start blow up a balloon and place it on your cup or jar.  Take your newspaper and scissors and cut it into strips that you will use to paper mache the balloon with.  You can use styra foam balls in place of the paper mache heads but the large styrafoam balls are quite expensive in my opinion and so I opted to go the paper mache route.
Next take your glue and water and mix it in a 1 to 1 ratio.  Equal parts water to equal parts Elmer’s glue.    Dip a strip of newspaper into the glue mixture.  Coat all sides of the strip.  Run the strip between your index and middle finger to remove excess glue.  Place the strip on the balloon.

I turned my balloon over several times during the process to make sure that I completely covered the balloon.

Continue placing strips on the balloon until completely covered.  It doesn’t have to be perfectly smooth as the paper mache will be hidden under the sheet but you do want it to be completely covered..  Let  dry.  Once dry, I came back and added another layer of paper strips because I wanted the final product to be thick and last for a while.  If you don’t add the second layer I think the paper mache will be too thin and when the balloon pops it may collapse.  Once your balloon is dry spray it with a clear sealer.  I used clear matte laquer because that is what I had on hand.  This will prevent it (hopefully! I haven’t tested this part out yet) from collapsing if you place your ghosts outside and it happens to rain.

I bough a twin size sheet from Walmart for around $5.00.  I was able to cut two ghosts from it.  In hind sight, I should have either bought two flat sheets or purchased a king size flat sheet (two twins equal a king).  Since I am making three ghosts for my front yard, I am going to have to rummage through my linen closet to see if I have any old white sheets, which I  I should have done in the first place!  I folded my sheet in half and cut it down the middle.
Next I cut off the sewn edges in order to give the ghost a, well, ghostly appearance.  I like the edges to be raggedy.
Center the sheet on the top of the balloon.

Next, take your glue and apply it to the screw part of the hook.  Be generous.

Poke a hole through the sheet and the top of the balloon. (Your balloon will pop at this point.  It should leave you with a hard shell.) I added more glue between the bottom of the sheet and the paper mache balloon to hold it in place.  Once I placed the hook in, I added more glue around the top hook.  I don’t want my ghost to blow away so I was very generous with the glue.

Now comes the fun part – adding the eyes.  I used a black Sharpie to draw the eyes on my ghosts.

And here is what the completed little ghost looks like.  We have a tree in our front yard that I am going to hang them from. Have a great day!
