Some Amazing Summer Science Activities for Kids

Would you like to engage and entertained your kids without your interference during the summer holidays? You may also be thinking to utilize this holidays to keep your kids updated in their skills and knowledge. Here are a few ideas summer science activities for kids, which can be included in their daily routine for the next few weeks.

1.    Create a solar oven

All you need for this project is a pizza box. Cut a flap for your oven door on the top of your box. Paste aluminum foil to the part of the flap facing the inside of the box. Now paste black construction paper inside the box. Cover the oven window with a plastic sheet and prop the flap up with a stick at the correct angle. Your solar oven is ready. The aluminum sheet reflects the sunlight into the box, the construction paper absorbs it and the plastic sheet absorbs the heat.

2.    ICY Fizzing letters

These are perfect for kids who are just learning their alphabets. Mix 3 part baking soda with 1 part water and your magic mixture for fizzing letters is ready. All you have to do now is add in Jell-O powder for flavor and pour into your alphabet molds to freeze. Your kids will love to watch the alphabets “melt” as they drop vinegar on them. This is also the perfect opportunity to teach your older kids about the difference between physical changes and chemical changes.

3.    Make homemade giant balloons

Mix 6 cups water (distilled is best but tap water is fine) with 1/2 cup blue Dawn dish detergent, 1/2 cup corn flour, 1 tbsp baking powder and 1 tbsp Glycerine for the best bubble recipe ever! Your kids will love the huge bubbles.

4.    Frog life cycle activities

Set up a frog life cycle investigation area for kids. Fill a tank with rainwater or pond water and add some pond weeds and small logs in it. Now you can put the frog spawn in the tank. Add information booklets, diagrams of the frog life cycle, observation diaries, questioners, activity books and toy frogs to add a few more fun activities for kids. Kids show a great deal of enthusiasm in feeding the frogs and noting down any changes they may observe as the tadpoles grow into frogs. It is important to release the tadpoles back into the ponds when they grow into frog lets so that they know where to grow their eggs.

5.    Do some science activity

One of the best ways to get children interested in science is to give them a problem and ask them to find a solution to it. You will be surprised by the innovative solutions they come up with applying all they have learned in class to the problem at hand. For example, a module on rocks at school can be supplemented by a fun lego-excavation project at home. This project gives kids the opportunity to play archeologist as they excavate a “fossilized lego men” from “the glacier of ice”. All you have to do to make your very own fossilized lego man is freeze a piece from your child’s lego set in an ice cube. Provide your kids with a few options such as pouring salt on them, using hot water, vinegar and detergent.  Watch your child try out different methods to free the lego man from the ice and learn which ones work.

6.    Volcano model activity for kids

This model has always been a favorite. To make your very own baking soda volcano, model around a bottle with dough and paint to make your volcano. Make it as realistic as possible. Add 4 tablespoons of bicarbonate soda to the bottle with a funnel. Add red and yellow food color to a cup of vinegar. Now, to make your volcano erupt, just pour the vinegar into your bottle. Your kids will love to see the lava pour out of the volcano they made. Add a bit of dishwashing soap for extra fun. You could also check out subscription boxes for kids for more ideas.

7.    Science with candy

Do your kids love pop rocks? How about an experiment to investigate what makes pop rocks make loud popping noise in your mouth? Get some Pop Rocks, Balloons and Soda Bottles. Use a funnel to pour some pop rocks into a balloon. Now fix the end of the balloon on to the Soda bottle such that the pop rocks fall into the soda. Wait and watch what happens. The balloon slowly begins to expand. This is because both the soda and the pop rocks contain pressurized CO2 When the pop rocks come in contact with the soda some of the CO2 escapes upwards causing the balloon to inflate. Repeat this experiment a few more times changing the temperature of the soda water every time. Ask your kids to note down what they observe.

8.    DIY vegetable garden for kids

This is perfect for kids who love the outdoors. Not only is it a great way to teach kids about germination and plant life cycles, it is an opportunity to let kids become more nurturing and responsible. Choose easy to grow plants like beets, carrots, radishes, and tomatoes. Let your child be involved in deciding where and what they want to add in the gardening. Let them help with soil preparation and planting the seeds. Get them child-sized rakes, watering cans and other garden tools. If you don’t have enough space for a full-sized vegetable garden a container garden is a good idea too!

Let your child learn while playing using through amazing activities. They shall become curious and imbibe many good habits with these science game kits. Enjoy the summer holidays!!!
