Summer Sampler 2018 – Maois and Petra Blocks

Happy Monday, and happy Labor Day, U.S. peeps! I didn’t manage a post last week, so today I’m doubling up, showing you the next two blocks from the Summer Sampler 2018 quilt-along.

This week’s block is Maois by Carolina Oneto, inspired by Easter Island and its iconic stone statues. It’s another fabulous block, and a welcome break from complicated piecing! This one was a breeze to put together, and yet it adds so much to the design of the completed quilt.

This block was so easy-peasey that I don’t have much of a weekly tip! My only suggestion is to press seams open, for maximum flatness and accuracy. Even if you always press your seams to the side, this might be the block to give open-seam-pressing a trial run, since there are zero intersecting seams that need to nest!

And let’s not forget last week’s block: Petra by Katie Blakesley, inspired by an ancient city in Jordan.

This one is paper-pieced for accuracy, but it’s fairly simple, straightforward paper-piecing. I sewed this one in the Sewtopia Milwaukee Sewing Lounge, while thoroughly distracted and chatting with the folks around me, and it still came out great! Lol. Although I did have to be sure to write the colors onto my paper-piecing templates in order to make it a little more foolproof.
