Living on the Railroad - DIY Homes (Videos)

Train enthusiasts come in all shapes and sizes, and can be found around the world. Most take their pleasure from riding the rails, visiting museums or collecting model trains. Then there are those who decide nothing will do except to live in a train car.

The first video is of a young couple who decided to settle down, and have crafted for themselves an oasis which suits their needs and lifestyle. The result is a very different styled dwelling in Fort Collins, Colorado. Take a look at this tiny house, crafted from a World War II train car. While they kept the exterior’s original time-weathered look, the interior is a much changed world.

This second video takes us to the other side of the world.

Located in the Central Otago region on the South Island of New Zealand, this conversion project has been a true “labor of love” for owner Mandy, with the restoration and interior renovation taking eight years of part-time work.

The result is a pair of railway carriages which provide comfortable and creative living spaces. The main living space was created in the former passenger carriage while the goods carriage has been made into a separate bedroom for guests.

Being located on such a remote property, the home is unable to connect to services and so is completely off the grid, capturing it’s own rain water and generating it’s power from a small solar system. The commode is a long drop toilet (pit latrine), situated in its own structure between the two carriages.

All the years of hard work paid off, changing two derelict old railway carriages into two comfortable off-the-grid homes.
