Industrial flooring: A growing trend in the use of flooring

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

If there is one element that, until not too long ago, was not paid attention to, it is the floor of any outdoor building where there is a lot of traffic of people or machines throughout the day. The only exception is when this floor is broken. Except in that circumstance, the floor is an element that has received little attention.

Or at least this has been the case until in recent decades, thanks to advances in research and development of new materials for commercial use, the use of industrial flooring has begun to become popular.

A new type of surface with innovative materials that has considerably improved the quality of the floor, both for areas with human traffic and for machinery. So much so, that its use is very common in such important sectors as health care within hospitals, using a type of industrial floor specially designed to offer antibacterial properties.

Although this is just one of many sectors that are increasingly taking advantage of the special features they offer compared to the cement or tile flooring that was traditionally used.

How many types of industrial land are there?

Within this class of flooring, we can find three types of industrial flooring, each with its own set of properties and advantages. Making them more suitable for working environments, both industrial in a factory and facing the public.

Epoxy resin flooring:

Floors made of epoxy resin are the most used both in environments with a lot of activity and transit of people in closed environments, and in industrial work spaces.

One of the most important characteristics of an industrial resin floor, as is the case with all other industrial floors, is that due to the material used, it is a continuous floor with no joints or seams. It is a single surface as big as the premises need it.

As it is a floor without joints between different parts, there are no areas where dust and dirt can accumulate. In addition, the very nature of the resin makes it an impact resistant floor without deteriorating.

One of the characteristics of these floors is that additives are added to the epoxy resin that give it fireproof properties and thus offer greater safety.

For all these reasons, industrial epoxy floors are widely used in hospitals, gyms, indoor sports areas or industrial work areas.

Polyurethane flooring:

This kind of industrial floor is widely used in environments exposed to the elements where there can be a great variation in the temperature that the floor suffers. Such as in car parks or cold rooms.

Its main characteristic is its resistance to thermal changes, withstanding environments that range from -40 degrees centigrade to 130.

In addition, polyurethane resists both abrasion and UV rays while offering good adhesion to common materials such as cement.

It is precisely this latter property that makes polyurethane industrial flooring one of the most widely used alternatives in car parks that need to be renovated to cover unevennesses.

This type of floor is used in automatic warehouses that use robots to move products quickly inside and need the surface to be completely level.

In these warehouses, the high level of flatness offered by these floors is essential for them to work well. Although they are not yet common, their use is increasing.

Polyurethane and cement flooring:

The latter industrial flooring is used in the chemical and food industry due to its properties such as resistance to chemical substances, long life and resistance to wear and tear or waterproofing. In these industries, the fact that the floors are waterproof allows their cleaning to be much more efficient and dust is not a problem.

Similarly, polyurethane-cement floors offer high resistance to mechanical elements or significant thermal shocks, which allows them to be washed at high temperatures effectively without compromising their durability.

They are widely used in industrial kitchens and heavy industries.

As you can see, there are many reasons why this type of flooring is starting to be used more and more in all commercial sectors. Because its cost is compensated with its long durability that avoids having to invest in maintaining or repairing damaged areas with its continuous use.
