Scientists map deep magma chambers beneath Mount St. Helens

Scientists say the way two large magma chambers are connected under Mount St. Helens may explain the peak’s 1980 explosion, according to a report released Wednesday.

One giant magma chamber is 5 to 12 kilometers below the surface and an even larger one is 12 to 40 kilometers deep, according to ScienceMag.org.

Researchers say the deeper chamber may be supplying magma to Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams, and a set of dormant volcanoes called the Indian Heaven volcanic field based on its location between all three.

Scientists believe the earthquakes that occurred in 1980 prior to Mount St. Helens eruption may marked the movement of magma from the lower chamber to the upper chamber.

By monitoring for earthquakes along the path in the future, volcanologists should be able to sound the alarm about a coming eruption.

Scientists created a two-dimensional picture of the chambers by using 2,500 seismometers to pick up reflections of the energy waves from 23 explosive detonations. The seismometers were placed on trails and logging roads surrounding the volcano. Each explosion had the force of a small earthquake.

They also mapped the upper 5 kilometers of crust using 920 seismometers placed near the summit of Mount St. Helens.

A set of 75 long-lasting seismometers will remain around the volcano until 2016 to record teleseismic earthquakes — ones that rumble all the way through the Earth — to be able to create images down to 80 kilometers.

The campaign “imaging magma under St. Helens” (iMUSH) began in 2014.
