I am writing to ask you to join me in the fight for your right to privacy online.

A panel of the U.S. House of Representatives has just advanced legislation that would force ISPs to retain logs about your online activities. That’s the last thing that we want to do!

The Electronic Frontier Foundation sums it up well: “The U.S. House of Representatives is currently considering H.R. 1981, a bill that would order all online service providers to keep new logs about our online activities, logs to help the government identify the web sites we visit and the content we post online. This sweeping new ‘mandatory data retention’ proposal treats every Internet user like a potential criminal and represents a clear and present danger to the online free speech and privacy rights of millions of innocent Americans.”

Today we retain most customer IP allocation logs for just two weeks; we don’t need them beyond that period, so they are deleted. Storing logs longer presents a risk to you, and potentially makes our customers the target of invasions of privacy.

I urge you to click to write to your representatives in hopes of stopping this bill and preserving your right to privacy online. If you have a little more time available and if you want to make a much bigger impact, I also would also encourage you to call your House Representative. Calling can be more effective than sending them email vie the form, and you can find out what your Representative’s position is. Click to phone your represenative, you can look up their contact information and call to tell them you oppose H.R. 1981.
