Why Are the Clintons Receiving $1M a Year?

The Clinton family is receiving nearly one million dollars in taxpayer money each year, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Since leaving the White House, the former president has received almost 16 million dollars from the Federal government. These funds came in the form of benefits and pensions.

In the last 13 years, the Clintons have earned more than 100 million dollars. Many estimates place the net worth of the family above 50 million dollars. Former First Lady Hillary Clinton claimed the family was “dead broke” when they left the White House in 2001.

The former secretary of state said, “[W]e struggled to piece together the resources for mortgages for houses, for Chelsea’s education. You know, it was not easy.”

Some commentators immediately took notices of Hillary’s use of the plural houses. Posters on social media sites compared her struggle to buy multiple houses to a 2008 comment by John McCain that he could not remember the number of homes he owns.

George W. Bush receives even more money from federal coffers. The 43rd president was provided $1.28 million in funding for 2014. This amount included an average of $102,000 a year in telephone expenses. An additional $135,000 was provided for office expenses, including furniture.

The Obamas have an even more extravagant lifestyle, paid for with public funds. Author Robert Keith Gray estimates the government currently spends $1.4 billion a year on the Obama family. Celebritynetworth.com estimates the president is worth $12.2 million dollars.

The White House employs the largest presidential staff in American history. A total of 469 senior staff members work for the chief executive, and 226 of those people make more than $100,000 each year. These include a dog handler, paid $102,000 a year, who is often flown around the world with the first family.
