The candidate representing the People’s Political Party in the Sept. 3 byelection to replace retired Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop.

kevin clarke calls himself “the most wrongfully arrested man in the City of Toronto.” Clarke said that is because of his willingness to put his ideas out into the political arena. While often running in electoral campaigns, he doesn’t always find himself invited to all-candidates meetings and debates, which, in the past, has led to clashes with law enforcement.

But he said he wants to connect to voters through such meetings and share his message — which he feels to be the message of the people, not the political parties.

The Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario has been his
No. 1 target as of late.

“I’ve been targeting the conservatives since they called their leadership race,” Clarke said. “We wish for them to debate us on the issues that affect the people.”

He’s here specifically because of Dunlop’s successor as PC candidate in Simcoe North: Patrick Brown, the party’s leader.

Clarke is not thrilled with Brown or his insistence the byelection should happen as soon as possible. Initially, Clarke hoped People’s Political Party Leader John J. Martins would take on Brown in the byelection, but the timing of the campaign, coinciding with the federal election, meant Clarke was the only one available.

“(Brown) put the pressure on Kathleen Wynne to call an early election,” Clarke said.

To turn the tables on Brown — and the other candidates, for that matter — Clarke said he wants to focus on the issues he feels are most important, such as poverty, youth crime and employment and proper care for senior citizens.

Clarke plans to attend the Orillia District Chamber ofCommerce’s all-candidates meeting Thursday night, promising to be on his “utmost respectful behaviour.”

“These politicians cannot stand up to the people,” he said. “And Kevin Clarke is the voice of the people.”

The 51-year-old formerly homeless man officially lists himself as the chief financial officer of the People’s party, which he founded in 2011. Health concerns caused him to relinquish leadership of the party in 2014.

He is also planning to run in the federal election, but the outcome of the Simcoe North byelection will determine in which riding he will seek to be elected.
