Yesterday I noticed that an electrical contractor was placing 45Kw transformers in a Medical Call Center. Typically a call center uses about 75KW max but if you are running a Backend for the Phone app you are going to need about 500KW of power for the servers. Outside the building has a MegaWatt 6KV to 480V transformer and there was packaging for 12 45KW 490 to 208 transformers. These are expensive Seimans units costing about 20K USD a piece. I talked to two electricians cleaning up the packaging. 

I engaged them in conversation asking about the upgrade and if the OLD transformers are available as used hardware. Because in the USA it is most common that the electricians keep the old hardware and resell it or recycle the copper weight. The response for the Younger man was that they threw them away. (this made me alert) no electrician would pass up a 500 USD recycle spiff.

I then engaged the older guy making note of the circumstance of what I was looking at.

Both men wore company T-shirts cheap silk screen variety single color over ORANGE. The Younger man wore Ukrainian Fatigue Pants and Italian Welders Boots No belt. The older man wore Soviet style Levis acid washed Knock off Jeans with FILA court shoes. The Young guy spoke very little and would not look me in the eye. The older man spoke with a slightly South African accent and seemed unaware of the scrap or resale value of Used transformers in the USA.
