Man Arrested After 18-Month-Old Girl Allegedly Raped in Beaufort West

A 21-year-old man faces rape charges after an infant left in his care was violated — the latest in a devastating pattern of child sexual abuse that demands urgent national reckoning.

A21-year-old man has been arrested and charged with rape after an 18-month-old girl was allegedly violated while left in his care in Kwa-Mandlenkosi, Beaufort West, in the Western Cape. The accused appeared before the Beaufort West Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 18 March 2026, where the case was postponed to 26 March 2026 to allow for legal representation and a formal bail application. He remains in custody.

According to police, the infant was placed in the man’s care on Monday, 16 March 2026. When the child’s mother returned, she noticed her daughter was in visible discomfort. Upon investigating, she made the horrifying discovery that the toddler had been sexually violated. The matter was immediately reported to the South African Police Service.

“The mother noticed the girl was uncomfortable. What she then discovered was among the worst violations a child can endure.”

The case has been taken up by the Beaufort West Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit — a specialised police division established precisely to investigate crimes of this nature. The FCS unit handles some of the most sensitive and disturbing cases in the South African justice system.
