Breaking Report — Advocacy & Human Rights

By Collen Makumbirofa  |  Makumbirofa Farms  |  Published June 30, 2026

A video of a Namibian driver being attacked in Mpumalanga, South Africa, is now circulating on social media, and it should stop every one of us in our tracks. A Namibian driver, lawfully present and working, is not an undocumented immigrant by any definition. And let it be said plainly: no one — not a mob, not a vigilante group, not a self-appointed “protector of jobs” — has the right to attack an undocumented immigrant either. No status, documented or not, justifies violence against a human being.

This attack did not happen in isolation. It is the latest entry in a growing record of violence against foreign nationals working and living in South Africa — drivers, traders, shop owners, laborers — people who came to earn a living and ended up targets of mobs that answer economic frustration with bloodshed.

When will this violence end in South Africa? Why are the AU and SADC silent? Are they afraid of South Africa?

That silence is the part that should trouble us as much as the video itself. The African Union and the Southern African Development Community were built, on paper, to protect the free movement, dignity, and safety of African citizens across the continent. Yet attack after attack against SADC nationals inside South Africa passes without a strong, public, coordinated regional response. If our own institutions will not speak for us, who will?

A Call to SADC Employers

SADC-based companies and employers must stop sending drivers and workers into South Africa under current conditions. South Africa, in the context of this ongoing xenophobic violence, has effectively become a hostile operating environment for foreign nationals. No delivery contract, no transport route, and no business deal is worth a driver’s life. Employers have a duty of care, and that duty means reassessing routes, escorts, and assignments until the safety of foreign workers can be guaranteed.

To the diaspora community: please check on your friends, relatives, and colleagues who are still inside South Africa. Many people want to leave but cannot — they have no money for transport, no documents in order, and some are stranded in remote areas far from embassies, consulates, or any organized support. A bus fare or a small transfer from someone who has already left can be the difference between a relative making it home safely and a relative becoming the next name in a headline.

Makumbirofa Farms stands for a different future — one where Africans are not forced to flee one country only to be attacked in another, where dignity and self-sufficiency are built from the ground up, beginning with our own land and our own communities. But that future requires resources, and right now it also requires us to respond to this immediate crisis. We are asking you to support both: our long-term work toward agricultural self-sufficiency in Zimbabwe, and our ongoing campaign against xenophobia and violence affecting our people across the region.

Every contribution helps fund our campaign against xenophobic violence, supports community relief efforts, and builds toward the Chegutu farming project — a long-term answer to the displacement and desperation that leave people vulnerable to exactly this kind of violence in the first place.
