What Caused the Market Meltdown?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Everybody out of the pool” and “Adult Swim Only” are phrases that ring in my ear from my trading days at Bear Stearns. A long lost friend (God bless you, buddy!!) would bellow those statements when markets plunged like today.

What drained the liquidity from our equity market ‘pool’? A number of critically important factors have been building and continue to haunt us. These include:

1. Meltdown in European sovereign debt. This is not and should not be a surprise. The meltdown was merely a matter of time. The outstanding question remains the depth and breadth of the meltdown. Stay tuned as risks remain very high.

2. The dysfunction in Washington truly displayed how screwed up our political dynamic is while shedding light on the enormity of our national debt and deficit. This reality is not changing anytime soon. Stay tuned as risks remain very high.

3. Higher rates in emerging markets to stem inflation portend slowing economies in these regions.

4. Many Wall Street and Washington wizards are now ratcheting down their domestic GDP projections. They are way behind the curve on this front.

Who has the best read on GDP and especially the American consumer?

In my opinion, our Sense on Cents Hall of Famer Rick Davis of Consumer Metrics Institute is without equal in keeping his pulse on the consumer specifically and the economy as a whole.

Rick’s work in which he captures online retail activity from a real time standpoint is cutting edge, hard hitting, and simply spectacular. His most recent piece addressing those largely overlooked revisions within our GDP, in my opinion, is as good as it gets.

I have seen few sites worthy of paying for the premium product. Rick’s Consumer Metrics Institute is one of them.

So what about those revisions to GDP which I highlighted a few days ago but got little widespread attention overall? Please stick with us and take the few minutes to review and ponder Rick’s work (anybody with questions, do not be bashful in asking),

Any doubt as to why Rick Davis occupies such an elevated position within the Sense on Cents Hall of Fame? It does not get any better than this.

While Rick speaks to the truth, what do I see and hear regularly in the midst of this equity market repricing? Numerous money managers indicating that Ben Bernanke will be forced to structure some form of quantitative easing, that is QE3, to support asset valuations. Not that QE1 and QE2 did much for our economy and the unemployed while inflating asset values and the cost of living.

Navigate accordingly while embracing and spreading both the Sense on Cents and Consumer Metrics Institute.

Questions, comments, constructive criticisms encouraged and appreciated.
