In the U.S. Bitcoin placed in the list of threats to investors

Governments and established financial institutions are likely to launch a campaign to quash the decentralized digital currency Bitcoin. Simon Johnson, economist and professor of entrepreneurship at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, speaking on stage at MIT Technology Review’s EmTech conference in Cambridge, Mass., last Thursday, said: “There is going to be a big political backlash”.

As it became known, The North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) today expanded its annual listing of financial products, practices and services that threaten to investors. In one of the items in the list says about digital currencies, in particular about Bitcoin. Among other things, it says: “Unlike traditional coinage, these alternatives typically are not backed by tangible assets, are not issued by a governmental authority and are subject to little or no regulation”. And also: “This environment has provided fertile ground for scam artists to capitalize on the increasing popularity and acceptance of digital currencies”.

We have already mentioned that American financial regulators insist that virtual-currency exchanges should register. Until not be worked out mechanisms for such regulation, it appears that the forecasts of economists like Simon Johnson will be come true.
