Comatose On Fourth Of July - TDV Week in Review: July 6th, 2014

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

I awoke on yet another Fourth of July and could feel the excitement in the air. This Fourth of July, a particularly exciting Dependence Day, fell on a Friday, so therefore kicking off a three-day weekend. Very exciting for many of ‘my fellow Americans’ as many of them work 40-60 hour weeks for about $10-$20 an hour, enough for alcohol, fast food and rent….and their school debts.

No – I did not hang out with anarchists this weekend. I did not hang out with libertarians. I did not even hang out with ‘politically activated’ people.  I hung out with people, who, if they had to self-identify with anything, they’d probably say, “I just wanna chill” or something similar. A non-violent philosophy, indeed. Or maybe they’d mention their favorite sports team.

First on the list this Dependence Day was get to a beach. Since I am currently in Portland, Oregon, this meant going to Sauvies Island which is located where the Columbia River and the Willamette River meet. Like ants in search of crumbs, humans were spread out all over this beach. My ten or so cohorts and I found a spot to enjoy the sun and we began setting up the BBQ’s and of course drinking beer.

The beer on the menu for most people – save of course for the occasional craft beer – was red, white and blue. That is, Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR) and Budweiser seemed the drink of choice for so many Americans, a drink I would call more akin to soda than beer.

But I kept my opinions to myself on the beer choices of others. After all of these years of being a culturally sensitive American I have learned some valuable lessons, one of the most important being that nobody really cares if they are a) killing themselves with their food and b) enslaved. In a way, these two aspects of American life make the Fourth of July the perfect holiday to celebrate “our great country.” Why?

First reason is beer. PBR for example, a popular drink, is not really much of a beer at all, filled with GMO’s and corn syrup as it is. Other favorites like Budweiser do not add such offensive ingredients, but many of my fellow Americans might be surprised to find that the majority of Budweiser is owned by a Belgian-Brazilian company, despite the American flag bottle decor. On this beach potable water was nowhere to be found. But forget drinking water,  most “red-blooded Americans” would note, for ”beer is 95% water.”

The second reason Fourth of July is the perfect American holiday is the food. GMO buns, Frito Lay potato chips, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and carcinogenic charcoals are only the beginning of a truly Fourth of July meal.

How about all that American meat?  It must be some high quality meat by world standards, right? A great way to get protein.

Wrong. American meat has been banned in a couple countries, such as Russia in 2013 (before the Ukraine crisis) because – no kidding – it was unhealthy. Too much ractopamine, which is a topic we have covered in TDV HomeGrown.

So the meat served up on the barbeque this Dependence Day in “The Land of the Free?” Low quality by global standards…

As for being enslaved? Well, Jeff covered that on the Fourth.

Where does this leave America? Hungover, overweight and behind bars.

How was your July Fourth? Let us know in the comments…

Before we get to the review, here’s what we wrote about in this month’s TDV Dispatch.

First up in my “Memory Hole”, I looked at contemporary designations of gender. Next, Jeff Berwick had a look at ancillary marijuana businesses in his “Vigilantes View”. Then, Ed Bugos had a look at the markets and more, as he does every week. Next, Jeff took us around the world of the absurd in his weekly “Other News from TEOTMSAWKI and TDV Related Tidbits”.

Then we had a TDV Group feature from Kristina Wilnes on Bergen, Norway.

Following was a Get Your Gold Out of Dodge (GYGOOD) update and finally, we profiled Hans Hermann-Hoppe.

ANARCHIST HIGHWAY

Joshua Bennett answers that interminable question: Who will build the roads?

Financed in 1974 by the State and different oil companies and built by Alyeska Pipeline Services, the Haul Road was built to service the North Slope oil fields of Alaska. Alyeska maintained the road until the State of Alaska took over this service. This ‘service’ is such that, just this year, a 150-mile stretch of the road was so bad that 15 mph was too fast to travel. A truck driver hopped into a State road grader and did a little road maintenance himself for about 30 miles; it turned out to be the best stretch of the road. The State was quite miffed because one person did that much during a time the DOT was complaining about lack of funding (but no one will rat out the driver who did it). The trip to Deadhorse is nearly 500 miles from Fairbanks, the industry hub for the oil fields.”

DICK CHENEY HAS HIS FIRST GOOD IDEA

Jeff Berwick on Cheney’s grand idea.

You might know Dick Cheney as the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks and the disinformation about Weapons of Mass Destruction in the lead up to the Iraq War. But those weren’t his only ideas… Other ideas include shooting that guy while duck hunting and Haliburton’s selling nuclear technology to Iran. In fact Haliburton does not care whatsoever about which countries the US bans trades with. They’ll trade anyway with them. But Dick Cheney has only just recently had his best idea yet…

THE TWO FACES OF GUN CONFISCATION. BOTH BITE.

Wendy McElroy on those coming for your guns and what it means in the bigger picture.

“Some advocates believe gun ownership is a 2nd Amendment right that is guaranteed by the Constitution. But it should be obvious by now how dangerous it is to base a human right upon a government document. Governments change, they brim with politicians, and documents can be reinterpreted. The right to gun ownership resides in the jurisdiction that each human being rightfully has over his own body and over peaceful enjoyment of it. This jurisdiction does not come from a document but from the basic human right to defend what is yours…what is you. Your body, the property that results from your labor, and those you love who are peacefully living their lives. These are what the state wishes to confiscate.”

A WAR ON CASH IN AMERICA

Joe Johnson on your currency.

“One of the great freedoms in any society is the ability to carry out personal, and even anonymous, transactions with cash. You walk into a store or up to a merchant, buy something and walk away. You’re walking down the street, stop at a garage sale, pick up a few things, and continue on. Both parties are satisfied with the exchange, though it’s possible that you never learn each other’s names, and might even forget the location.

HAPPY “NO REFUSAL DAY” 2014

This is not the July Fourth you’re looking for, says Jeff Berwick.

This Dependence Day, people who live in the geographic region known as the US will celebrate by drinking foreign beer like Budweiser, and many will make empty, slurred gestures in reference towards “their nation’s” imaginary core values, like freedom and liberty with little to no understanding of the concepts and their historical contexts. They believe they are free, which of course means they are hopelessly enslaved.
