We have three months left until the end of 2020, and the journey so far has been quite overwhelming. Since the beginning of the year, America has faced one major crisis after the other, from imminent war threats to widespread natural disasters, the propagation of a highly contagious virus, a critical economic collapse plus extensive unemployment rates, social turbulence, food insecurity, housing instability, and even an uncanny comeback of biblical plagues! It’s no wonder why a feeling of defeat is emerging amongst Americans. It’s just too much.

This is the American nightmare, as some reporters are calling. But it also can be a wake-up call for us to readjust our perspectives about the world. There’s no doubt that we’re living in historical times, but instead of seeing this moment as the end-line, we should remember that we are witnessing how the collapse of the economy will likely reshape our society and build something new. That’s why today we decided to do a retrospective of some of the events we have lived thus far and reflect upon what is yet to come.

The past nine months felt like a century. Every year has new determining phenomenons, but 2020 went above and beyond. We are experiencing such a powerful rush of world-changing, paradigm-shifting developments that it’s getting hard not to imagine that we’re in a simulation that’s running every possible incident at once to test our strength and our capability to adapt as a society and as individuals. And it seems like there’s no time to breathe, with an ongoing sanitary crisis still spreading, being lethal to many Americans and leaving others with serious health aftereffects – while intervening with many sectors of our beaten economy; in addition to rising waves of social agitation nationwide, the worst wildfire season in the history of the state of California and the coming elections, there’s yet a lot of history to be made in 2020.

When disasters occur sequentially, it can make it seem as though our problems are insurmountable. It’s getting worse and worse, we think. It’s never going to get better. While all of us are tapped into the disasters that become national news, community events can add to the mental load. A plant closing in your town that puts hundreds of people out of work is a disaster, too. That is to say, September hasn’t been much different from the previous months. We have just registered that over 60% of job losses will be permanent, as the number of retail bankruptcies surge. The number of victims affected fatally by the virus is close to 200,000 now.

What’s more, the losses of “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman, and most recently, Supreme Court’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg are causing commotion nationwide. Likewise, people have been expressing their disgust in light of a whistleblower’s claim that the federal immigration detainees underwent full hysterectomies without their consent. That’s why saying 2020 has been difficult is a total understatement. 2020 has been a complete struggle. And what is most concerning is how we became polarized. We don’t agree on anything anymore. Not on masks, not on reopening schools, or on what to do when a vaccine becomes available. This year has defied any possible prediction to the point that it has become impossible to know if the worst is behind us or still coming for us, because what the rest of the year holds remains obscure.
