I’d say that if you hear the bullet generally it missed you but, yes, drop immediately and move to cover immediately, and stay down. If you do not move then you are not a target. Have a knife ready under you. Do not move unless you know who, how many, and where all the enemy is. Use your ears. Keep breathing slow and controlled. When you move, move fast and decisively. Kill or run. Do not try to do both

For me pointing a gun at me is the threat to kill me then or later and I won’t ignore that opening move. In a collapse life will be very cheap. For a while. Then communities will slowly form. 

350 million in America. Not so much wildlife anymore nor fish. Store up in multiple places and be very cautious hunting, trapping, and fishing until after the first Winter. Be a lot less than 350 million by then

It is Stranger or Known Not predator or prey Brad. Everyone including family is a predator until known to me as okay. SHTF will not bring out the best in people despite Hollywood and Prepper Fiction. 

Porch Pirates. Won’t take much for them to start kicking the doors in. Without food or news most everyone becomes a porch pirate

Carry cigarettes and offer them one. Smile and look relaxed. Tell them your name and do not tell them info that leads to where you live but give them a decent story. Keep it simple. This will work in most circumstances after a few months into a collapse. After a few months people will be desperate for ‘news’ from away. The world will be very, very local. The first few months? Hide and hide well. Especially in well armed communities. It will be a blood bath.

I can definitely see people getting robbed for their groceries as they come out the supermarket as more people start to lose it all. Always keep an eye out for any danger as you shop. Park closer to the front of the store.
