Having a great Plan B means living your life without fear

Here in Puerto Rico people instinctively understand why they need to prepare for disaster.

Why have a backup generator or off-grid solar system? Because the power was out for months after Hurricane Maria in 2017. The electricity isn’t especially reliable in the best of times.

Why keep extra cash on hand? Because when the power is out (which happens all the time), stores can’t always accept credit cards. The ATMs that work run out of cash pretty quick.

Why have extra food on hand? Same reasons, especially on an island, especially when the entire world is facing supply chain issues.

But Puerto Rico is not the only place vulnerable to power outages, supply chain disruptions, and natural or man-made disasters.

How high will inflation rise with the way the Fed has been printing money?

How bad will the supply chain problems become, when public health dictators can force businesses to shut down, fire their heretical employees, and scare workers into cowering in fear at home?

Now the media has started to talk about price controls.

“Could strategic price controls help fight inflation?” asks The Guardian, ignoring the basic economic fact that price controls always cause shortages.

And now, just like in the spring of 2020, people are once again seeing empty grocery store shelves.

As a member of the Sovereign Man team, you should not be surprised to hear that I have a Plan B.

Note— I don’t have a doom and gloom view of the world. Actually, at Sovereign Man, we are all extremely optimistic about the world and its opportunities.

We all have exciting projects that we’re working on, and we live active, joyful lives. We aren’t stocking up our bunkers waiting for the end of the world.

That’s not what a Plan B is, i.e. it’s NOT about living a life of fear.

Quite the opposite, actually. Your Plan B is about rationally acknowledging obvious risks and taking basic steps so that you can live your life WITHOUT fear.

Here are a few things that I’ve done—

First, because of everything I already mentioned about Puerto Rico, I’ve stock up on non-perishable food that I regularly eat anyway.

For example, you can currently buy a one year supply of rice for two adults (160lb.) for $136 at Costco. Stored properly in five gallon buckets with air tight lids (

To be clear, that is enough rice for two adults to each eat a large portion every day for an entire year. That’s a pretty cheap insurance policy.

That covers my carbohydrate intake.

And for emergency nutrients, I turn to my roof top container garden.

With just a few windows in your home or apartment, you can grow a constant supply of scallions, basil, and mint. They grow very easily and require very little effort. Plus they’re tasty and quite nutritious.

Because my top floor apartment includes a rooftop terrace, I have a little more room to work with.

I have a small moringa tree because it grows quickly and has edible leaves, pods, seeds, and flowers packed with protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, calcium, iron, potassium, and more.

I’ve also managed to grow sweet potatoes in a five gallon planter, and the vine looks great on a trellis.

There’s literally zero downside in doing this— having a small garden, or even a few planter boxes.

If you have children, it’s an even better idea. The kids can have an activity that doesn’t involve staring at a mobile phone, where they can watch life literally come right out of the soil.

And, of course, if the worst happens, you’ll have a nice insurance policy in being able to supply a portion of your family’s daily Calorie needs.

But this is all easy for me to say, right? I live in Puerto Rico with a 365 day growing season.

Of course there is some truth to that. But no matter what the climate is like where you live, there are plants that will grow.

This is something that takes very little effort to get started. You can seriously start with nothing more than a Styrofoam cup, a little bit of dirt, and a single seed.

Again, there’s absolutely zero downside. And that’s what a great Plan B is all about.
