Rule By Narrative

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

He who writes the textbooks is the true power behind the throne and behind fake elections.

What good is democracy if what the voters believe is false?

Regimes that rely on narratives to rule do so because they’re incapable of ruling.

Successful governments don’t need to lie and when they do they’re believed.

China’s government doesn’t need to sell stories to its people because it is too busy building and making money.

The governments in the Western world, the Middle East, and pretty much everywhere else are losing money and not building anything. They are reverting to selling stories and making up lies to try retain the status quo.

And when consent by narrative fails that’s when the guns come out. Those who first burn the books inevitably turn to burning people.

An excerpt from, “The Battle for the Past: How Power Rewrites History to Secure the Present” By Prof. Ruel F. Pepa, Global Research, December 22, 2025:

History is never a neutral record of events, nor is it a simple accumulation of facts arranged in chronological order. It is a contested space where memory, identity, and legitimacy collide, shaped as much by power as by evidence. The act of recording history always involves selection: deciding which events matter, whose voices are preserved, and how causes and consequences are framed. Because of this, those who hold power have consistently sought to control historical narratives by emphasizing achievements that legitimize their rule, minimizing or erasing episodes of violence and injustice, and discrediting alternative accounts that challenge official versions of the past. Across continents and political systems, whether authoritarian regimes, colonial administrations, or even democratic states, a familiar pattern emerges. Rulers and their supporters revise or reinterpret history to portray themselves as inevitable, righteous, or necessary, while casting opponents as dangerous, illegitimate, or morally corrupt. In doing so, they transform history into a political tool rather than a critical inquiry.

This struggle over historical memory is neither accidental nor purely academic. It is deliberate, urgent, and deeply political, because control over the past shapes how societies understand themselves in the present. Historical narratives establish moral boundaries: they define heroes and villains, victims and perpetrators, progress and decline. When a regime succeeds in imposing its version of history, it gains more than symbolic power as it influences public values, national identity, and the limits of acceptable debate. By contrast, challenging official histories can destabilize authority, expose wrongdoing, and open space for demands for justice or reform.

For this reason, battles over textbooks, monuments, archives, and public commemorations are often as intense as struggles over laws or elections. Whoever controls the past does not merely interpret what has been; they help determine what is remembered, what is forgotten, and ultimately what futures a society can imagine.
