Social Takes Over Job Search

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The world of graduate jobs is cut-throat, every degree is becoming more and more competitive and nothing is set to change.  But with this in mind, the way in which recent graduates are searching jobs.  Social is the new e-mail!

We recently visited Nido Student Living – one of London’s premiers student accommodation providers, and spoke with students and their views on using social to source jobs.

Here is what Derek McClain, Business and Economics Student highlighted “I invested three years ago in my online presence, not only Facebook, but Tumbler, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn. For which I am delighted. I have never really used any of my profiles for the social aspect, what I do is blog and share content. This has allowed me to build-up a professional online presence”.

Derek has clearly done his research, this is exactly what new graduates want to be doing – be social in a very professional capacity, show that you are interested and engaged with your industry. Connect to as many HR professionals, CEO’s and Directors as you can.

In 2012 it was reported that 77% of employers are using web 2.0 to source new talent, is an increase of over 50% compared with the same period one year previously. This trend has by now way decreased. It is not uncommon for recruiters to use the power of LinkedIn premium accounts to tap into a talent pipeline.

LinkedIn is the primary focus for prospecting managers seeking new blood; therefore, if seeking new career, this is the place to be. Saying that, platforms such as Twitter and Tumbler certainly have their uses too.

James Clements, a Student of Engineering use his Tumbler to blog about his recent projects. This had actually turned out to be particularly useful and now works for a major engineering firm based in the UK.
