What is SEO?
Do you know how many websites are published each day? Any ideas? Well, it is over a million. That means 46 people have pressed ‘publish’ by the time you read these four sentences. This makes it tough to stand out. However, you have to, if you want to make your business a successful one.
Let us sit down, and talk about S to the E to the O. What is SEO? It stands for Search Engine Optimization, and you have probably heard the term if you have been around the internet for a while. Why is it important? We will tell you.
SEO is important because, in simple terms, it is how people find your site in search engines. Search engine traffic can contribute to a huge amount of your visitors, and if done right, can boost your presence online. Without getting too technical, here are some tips for making your website or blog search engine friendly.

SEO is the process by which your online content is optimized, so that a search engine likes to show it as a top result for searches of a certain keyword.
SEO can be split up into two separate categories; On-Page SEO & Off-Page SEO.
On-Page SEO refers to all the things that you can do ON your website to help you rank higher, such as page titles, internal linking, meta tags & descriptions, etc.
Off-Page SEO refers to all the things that you can do directly OFF your website to help you rank higher, such as social networking, article submission, forum & blog marketing, etc.
SEO can be categorized into five different aspects:
- Keyword research
- Search engine friendly site development
- On-page SEO
- Link Building
Each of the above is important and they all work together. Let us talk about each of the above in more detail.
With all the talk in the SEO world about content, authorship, and social signals, it is easy to forget a little thing that happens to be the foundation of SEO: keyword research. Keywords also help you figure out the thoughts, fears, and desires of your target market. If you can master the lost art of finding awesome keywords for your business — you will not only benefit from more search engine traffic – but you will also know your customers better than your competition.
Everyone would like their pages to rank #1, which begs the question, rank for what? Not all keywords and keyword phrases are equal. Some are typed into a search engine more often, and some are more likely to lead to a sale. You do not need or want to optimize for every possible keyword or phrase. When you tailor your on-page SEO around the right keywords, you will watch your site rocket to the top of Google — landing you more leads, sales, and commissions in the process.
Search engine friendly site development
Now this is where you will require a responsible development company (such as TrafficInviter!). When you build a website, there will be a number of best practices that you must understand to provide basic search engine visibility ‘out of the box’. These include:
- Non-duplicate content
- Permanent redirects on multiple domain names
- Search friendly URLs
- Correct use of on page SEO
- Fast (yes, speed is now ranked!)
If you have an existing site that is performing poorly, a quick glance at the source code can often bring to light a number of SEO and coding mistakes.
Once upon a time, people stuffed keywords everywhere they could, and their pages ranked in the search engines. Then, along came a hobbit that considered all that keyword stuffing was spam. Now the SEO kingdom no longer works as it once did. Today the idea is to write page content so that it reads well to real people. You also want to pay attention to a couple of key things.
- Correct use of <h1>, <h2> and <h3> heading tags
- Page titles
- Image alt tags and links titles
- Text navigation links (not flash or images)
- Relevant meta information (keywords, descriptions and robots)
Ultimately, when writing page content it is far more important to think about how well the content reads to real people than search engines. Think about why you want the page to rank in the first place. It is so; someone landing on it will absorb your content, and take some action.
Links, more than anything will determine where your pages rank. If you build a search friendly site, and generate incoming links to your pages, you are going to get search traffic. The best way to think about links is, as a recommendation or vote for your website. The more links you have from outside sources to your site, the more the information is seen as trusted.
In Google, Page Rank (PR) decides the value of a link. This is Google’s way of measuring authority. The PR of a web page is based on the PR of the pages linking to that page. However, PageRank is not the end. If you are chasing PR, you are going about things the wrong way. PR is only one factor among hundreds, and it is a Google specific measure, it does not reflect on how well your pages rank in any other search engine.
So what are the best links to get? It depends on the topic of your site, and the competition around that topic. Links from the Wikipedia, and the BBC are always going to be great.
Trusted, authority sites probably are not going to link to you just because you ask. You are generally going to need to give them a reason to link to you. That starts with your own content. The better your content, the more likely someone will want to link to it.
Always remember that you have to give to get. When you support other businesses, it makes it easier to help you back. Think about how you can help the site you are hoping will link back to you, build relationships, and network with other businesses.
Adding a links page to your site as an area to trade links with other sites in your business sector, is a great way to generate links.
How do you know if your SEO is working? Analytics allow you to know if your efforts are successful, and leading to a positive return on your investment.
There is no excuse not to have analytics set up on your site. Google Analytics is free, easy to set up, and most importantly offers some good statistics to help you understand what is happening with your website.
You can see how much traffic you are receiving from search engines and other sources, and set goals to your traffic that continues to grow, but if it does not or if you notice you’ve suddenly lost a lot of traffic, you can begin to look deeper to understand why.
