Revealed: Oxford Is the Most Instagrammable University in the UK
Oxford University Instagrammed 250,000 Times More Than Manchester
A recent study has found that Oxford is the most Instagrammable university in the UK, receiving more than four times as many posts than the University of Manchester.
The research, which was conducted by international education provider Oxford Royale Academy, found that while Oxford University has been Instagrammed 326,439 times, the University of Manchester has received 76,129 Instagram hashtags.
Oxford Royale determined the results by analysing each of the UK’s 132 universities, based on how many times they’d been hashtagged in a post on Instagram and ranked them from most to least.
In second place is the University of Cambridge, which has received 223,484 Instagram posts – that’s 102,955 less than Oxford University.
The London School of Economics and Political Science places third, with 192,000 posts on Instagram. It’s the only London university to make the top ten.
UWE Bristol has received 103,000 Instagram posts, meaning it ranks fourth. It’s one of two former polytechnic universities in the top ten most Instagrammable UK universities.
Coventry University and the University of Birmingham are flying the flag for the midlands, placing fifth and sixth with 96,978 and 93,578 posts respectively.
The University of Glasgow ranks as Scotland’s most Instagrammable university, thanks to the 92,624 posts that put it in seventh place. It beats rival institutions the University of Edinburgh, which comes 16th place with 57,282 Instagram posts and St Andrew’s University in 58th place, which has only received 22,808 posts.
While Newcastle University comes eighth overall, it’s the North East’s most Insta-worthy campus, with 83,466 posts.
In ninth place is the University of Leeds. It’s the only Yorkshire institution to feature in the top ten, receiving 81,397 Instagram posts.
80 per cent of the top ten most Instagrammable universities are part of the Russell Group, which is a group of institutions that have a reputation for academic achievement and a shared focus on research.
“After the pandemic, with students having a difficult time studying at home or during the lockdown, returning to a beautiful campus is likely to boost spirits and create an ideal atmosphere for these young people’s development,” said Oxford Royale Academy (ORA)’s CEO & Founder, William Humphreys, when asked to comment on the findings. “This generation of students has grown up with social media as an integral part of their lives, so it is interesting to look at how universities rank outside of the traditional academic factors.”
