Beyond the Campus: John H. Dozier’s Record of Community Engagement and Public Service

For John H. Dozier, higher education has never been limited to what happens inside a classroom. Throughout his career, he has treated colleges and universities as important partners in the communities around them, with a responsibility to contribute to economic opportunity, public health, cultural life, and social progress. That philosophy has continued during his presidency of Columbia College, where community engagement and student development have become closely connected.
Dozier’s record includes service on nonprofit, educational, business, and civic boards, as well as initiatives designed to give students opportunities to use their education beyond campus. His work with his wife, Victoria Dozier, has added another dimension to that commitment through scholarships, student wellness initiatives, and leadership programs.
A Career Rooted in Community Engagement
Community engagement became a significant part of Dozier’s professional work during his years at the University of South Carolina. As Director of Community Engagement and in other senior administrative roles, he helped develop systems for documenting community engaged scholarship and service learning. His work connected academic activity with community needs and encouraged the university to recognize the value of service as part of its educational mission.
That experience later informed his approach at Columbia College. Under his leadership, the college has strengthened relationships with local governments, healthcare providers, school districts, nonprofit organizations, and other community groups throughout the Midlands.
For Dozier, these relationships provide more than opportunities for institutional visibility. They create settings where students can practice communication, collaboration, decision making, and problem solving while working on issues that matter to the people around them.
Turning Student Learning Into Community Impact
Dozier believes students should graduate with more than academic credentials. His approach places strong emphasis on developing critical thinkers and problem solvers who can connect a liberal arts education with real world challenges.
That philosophy is also reflected in his focus on executive leadership and soft skills. Communication, collaboration, adaptability, decision making, and emotional intelligence are treated as important elements of preparation for professional life. These abilities can also help students become more effective participants in their communities.
Service learning, volunteerism, experiential learning, and workforce development partnerships have consequently remained important components of Columbia College’s broader engagement strategy. They give students opportunities to move between academic study and practical experience, while allowing community partners to benefit from their knowledge and energy.
Advancing Health and Wellness
Health equity has become another important area of Dozier’s community work. Through the Wellness in Action initiative, Columbia College has participated in efforts addressing diabetes and cardiovascular health disparities within Columbia’s 29203 ZIP code.
The initiative brings together partners such as Prisma Health, Richland County, the City of Columbia, local schools, and nonprofit organizations. Its focus reflects Dozier’s belief that higher education can play a meaningful role in addressing public challenges through collaboration.
His commitment to wellness also extends to the student experience. Together with Victoria Dozier, he has supported a broader approach to whole person wellness that considers physical, mental, and social well being.
Across campus, the Doziers have helped spearhead initiatives including a student fitness center, enhancements to the Koala Zen Room, hammocks and other outdoor wellness spaces, a revitalized greenhouse, and improvements to the dining hall. Healthier food options, yoga, and other wellness activities have also become part of the student experience.
The annual Wellness in Action Festival extends this work beyond the campus. Columbia College students have opportunities to share health and wellness education with K to 12 students, families, and members of the surrounding community. The effort reflects the Doziers’ belief that students should learn to care for their own well being while also using their education and leadership abilities to help address challenges faced by others.
Service Through Civic and Educational Boards
Dozier’s public service extends through a wide range of board memberships. His civic and nonprofit involvement has included the Central Carolina Community Foundation Board of Trustees, Columbia Urban League Board of Directors, Columbia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Midlands Business Leadership Group, and Wideman Davis Dance Board of Trustees.
He has also contributed to organizations connected to education, culture, and public life. His service has included the MIT Press Management Board, EdVenture Children’s Museum Board of Directors, Historic Columbia Board of Trustees, and the Boston Arts Academy Foundation Board of Directors. He has served on the American Heart Association Boston Affiliate Board of Directors, the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts Board of Directors, and the Black Ensemble Theater Board of Directors. These roles reflect the breadth of his interests, from education and economic development to health, arts, history, and community advancement.
In 2026, Dozier also served as Vice Chair of the South Carolina Tuition Grants Commission, adding another public service responsibility focused on higher education access and financial support for students.
Supporting Opportunity Through Family Initiatives
Community involvement has also been a shared commitment within the Dozier family. From 2011 to 2022, John and Victoria Dozier co owned The Language Buzz, a South Carolina language education center offering Spanish, French, and Mandarin immersion programs.
They also co founded The Language Buzz Foundation, which provides scholarships and grants to families with financial need. Their commitment to educational access has continued through the Dozier Scholarship Fund, established to support Columbia College students experiencing financial need.
Victoria Dozier, an engineer, entrepreneur, and community leader, serves as First Lady of Columbia College. Her partnership with John has been particularly visible in the college’s wellness initiatives and broader efforts to support students as whole individuals.
Recognition for Public Impact
Dozier’s community and institutional contributions have received recognition from professional and civic organizations. In 2026, he received the Health Equity Circle of Champions Award from the Alliance for a Healthier South Carolina. The recognition highlighted his leadership and commitment to advancing health equity, particularly through the connection of education, community partnership, workforce development, and access to health resources.
He was also named among Columbia Business Monthly’s 50 Most Influential People in 2025 and previously received the recognition in 2014. In 2025, he was included in the South Carolina 500, a statewide recognition of professionals making a significant impact across business, government, education, healthcare, and community leadership.
Earlier honors include the Richard A. Rempel Faculty Award from the University of South Carolina in 2016, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from South Carolina State University in 2015, and the Chicago Defender’s 50 Men of Excellence Award in 2011.
Continuing a Broader Mission
Dozier’s record of public service demonstrates a consistent belief that educational leadership carries responsibilities beyond institutional boundaries. Whether through civic boards, health initiatives, scholarships, student wellness, or community partnerships, his work has emphasized practical engagement and shared responsibility.
That approach now forms part of his leadership at Columbia College, where students are encouraged to become capable professionals and thoughtful contributors to the communities they serve. His community work, together with Victoria Dozier’s involvement in student wellness and educational initiatives, has helped broaden the idea of what a college can contribute to the public.
As Columbia College moves forward under Dozier’s leadership, his emphasis on education, wellness, service, and community partnership provides a foundation for an institution seeking to make its impact felt both on campus and throughout the Midlands.
