Boehner Challenges Pelosi to Hold Up-or-Down Vote on Stopping the Tax Hikes

Congressman Boehner today challenged Speaker Pelosi to hold an up-or-down vote on a plan to stop all coming tax hikes – before Congress skips town for the election. Hours after Boehner’s challenge, the Speaker indicated she might be open to the possibility of freezing all tax rates. Here’s the story:

>> “On Thursday, House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio said he wants an up-or-down vote on extending all the tax cuts before congressional elections in November. ‘Raising taxes on anyone, especially small businesses, is the wrong thing to do in a struggling economy,’ Boehner said. ‘On the issue of job killing tax hikes the American people are not going to accept anything less than the vote that they deserve.’” (Expiring tax cuts hit taxpayers at every level, Associated Press, 9/16/10)

>> “With only a couple of weeks remaining before Congress recesses for election season, action must be taken NOW to block the tax increase.” (Tell Congress to Prevent Tax Increases, Liberty Central, 9/16/10)

>> “Democrats leadership wants limited tax breaks, singling out small business owners for a crippling year-end tax increase. The Wall Street Journal reported that “uncertainty over looming tax increases” and the “prospect of higher taxes in 2011” is “weighing on business owners’ operational decision-making.” And the Tampa Tribune says, “Hiring has remained slow because business leaders are worried about what’s going to happen next with the economy and taxes.” Congressman Boehner’s taking action to change that and give private employers the certainty they need to get our economy moving again.
