Boehner: Require All Bills to Cite Constitutional Authority

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Today marks the 223rd anniversary of the signing of our Constitution – what President Ronald Reagan called “our blueprint for freedom.” Congressman Boehner marked the day by noting that “too often our Constitution is ignored by lawmakers,” and that’s why he supports requiring every piece of “legislation to cite its Constitutional authority or it doesn’t get a vote.” Here’s some of the coverage:

>> “One of the GOP proposals would require bills to have a specific citation of constitutional authority, on the heels of criticism that Democrats breached their constitutional limits in Congress with big-ticket bills like health care reform. If a member questioned whether the House had constitutional authority to pass a bill, that challenge would receive debate and a vote.” (Politico, 9/17/10)

>> “House Republicans, marking the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, called Friday for members of Congress to adopt a proposal that would require every bill to include language citing its constitutional authority. … House Minority Leader John Boehner’s blog argued that the Shadegg proposal could create ‘an obstacle to expanded government’ and could have put a check on the health care overhaul passed earlier this year.” (Fox News, 9/17/10)

Of course, bringing the Constitution back into the legislative process is only one important step. Boehner is also fighting to repeal unconstitutional laws like ObamaCare and replace it with common-sense free-market reforms aimed at lowering costs and protecting jobs.
