Due Date: Iowans forced to swallow massive property tax increases under Gov. Culver amid looming budget cliff next year
(DES MOINES) – Branstad 2010 campaign manager Jeff Boeyink issued the following statement today in response to this morning’s news conference where Chet Culver will claim a balanced budget as Iowans pay their increased property taxes:
“Gov. Culver will say at today’s news conference that the budget is balanced, which could not be further from the truth. His budget shifted $735 million of general fund spending to other sources to deceive Iowans about his true level of spending.
“Don’t forget, this is the same governor who, in the summer of 2009, claimed his budget was balanced, only to slash spending across-the-board by 10 percent when he could no longer hide the truth from Iowans.
“Tell Iowa property owners that the budget is balanced, when today they are on the hook for the largest increase in school property taxes in 30 years.2
“Chet Culver should tell the laid-off teachers that his budget is balanced.
“$735 million3 in one-time money was used last year and has created a massive budget cliff for next year, and he has no plan to fix it.
“Chet Culver does not understand what his irresponsible budgeting has done to property tax owners and schools across this state. It is time for a competent, proven manager like Terry Branstad in the governor’s office again.”
