Boehner in Greenville: “It’s Time for Us to Get Serious About Spending”

The Daily Advocate reports that “Congressman John Boehner campaigned in Greenville on Friday in his Victory Bus Tour for his ‘Get Out the Vote’ rally.” Boehner told the crowd of volunteers that “it’s time for us to get serious about spending.” Boehner said:

“It’s time to go through every line item in the budget and ask ourselves: is this spending so important that we’re going to ask our kids and grandkids to pay for it? And if it doesn’t meet that test, pass that test, we shouldn’t be doing it.”

John led Republicans in launching a “Pledge to America” – a governing agenda built by actually listening to voters – that calls for a renewed commitment to cutting government spending to help create new jobs and erase the deficit.

Michael Barone says the Pledge calls for “roll[ing] back non-defense discretionary spending to 2008 levels.” The Union Leader says Republicans want to “cap discretionary spending; roll back spending to pre-stimulus, pre-bailout levels; end TARP and federal support of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac; place sunsets on federal programs; ‘require a full accounting of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid’.” There’s also “a freeze on hiring federal workers except security personnel” according to the Associated Press.
