Enquirer: Boehner a “Highly Effective Legislator,” “the Clear, Solid Choice” for OH-8

The Cincinnati Enquirer says Congressman Boehner is a “highly effective legislator” and “the clear, solid choice” for voters in Ohio’s Eighth District. Here’s an excerpt from their endorsement:

“Boehner has been steadfast in his rejection of earmarks, has been a key player in education policy and has proven an effective spokesman for pragmatic conservative viewpoints.”

Boehner’s long-time opposition to wasteful spending was also noted by Bob Robinson, former editor of the Greenville Daily Advocate, who said, “we need more Boehners” in Congress. And the “more of him we have in Washington the less we’ll have to compromise to reach our goals.”

John led Republicans this year in adopting a unilateral ban on pork-barrel spending and has pledged to fight to “end earmarking as we know it and bring fundamental change to the manner in which Washington spends taxpayers’ money.”

In fact, his promise to change the way Congress works was cited by the Hamilton Journal News in its endorsement of Boehner. The Journal News said they were “most impressed with his pledges to reform the dysfunctional way that Congress does business — should he become Speaker”:

“In a sweeping Sept. 30 speech at the American Enterprise Institute, Boehner criticized the way that both his fellow Republicans and Democrats have run the House in the past, and pledged to open up the legislative process and empower lawmakers and committees to write legislation. Now, he told our editorial board recently, there are ‘about five people who control the whole process from beginning to end.’ That will change if he becomes Speaker, he said.

“‘It’ll begin the process of healing an institution that is broken,’ he said. ‘It will go a long way in breaking down the scar tissue that’s been built up between the parties and … created by both parties.’”
