ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY: Gov. Culver slashes state government by 10 percent

(URBANDALE) – Today, Gov. Culver celebrated the one-year anniversary¹ of his massive, across-the-board cut to state government – the largest in Iowa’s history – by placating to state employees, desperately hoping they wouldn’t notice.

The year-ago budget cut was a result of Culver’s inattention to the budget and disregard for warnings, said Boeyink.

“Chet Culver’s across-the-board cut caused budget chaos, massive disruption of services and furloughs for state employees,” said Boeyink. “On the first anniversary of this cut, he is desperately hoping state employees will forget. Their memories will last a lot longer than that.”

Boeyink added that Culver likes to brag about making “tough choices,” but refusing to listen to warnings about his bloated budget, combined with a refusal to call the Legislature back into session, has caused more than half a billion dollars in property tax increases².

“Terry Branstad will again balance the state’s budget, offer pay-as-you-go budgeting, and take a thoughtful approach with his plan to reduce the cost of government 15 percent over the next five years,” said Boeyink. “Culver’s 10 percent cut occurred in just one year. That is not fair to our schools and public employees who were burdened with this cut.”
