Boehner: ‘Our Hearts Are Broken But Our Spirit Is Not’

This morning Congress came together for the first time since the senseless attack on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) in Tuscon, Arizona, Saturday that left six dead and more than a dozen wounded.  House Speaker John Boehner opened today’s special session by introducing a resolution (available courtesy of Politico) honoring the victims, survivors and heroes of the Tucson shooting today shortly after 10 a.m.  WestChesterBuzz.com has Boehner’s remarks:

“Today is not a ceremony but tragedy that stirs us to renew our commitment to faithfully fulfill our oath of office. And let us not let this inhuman act frighten us into doing otherwise…

“Our hearts are broken, but our spirit is not. This is a time for the House to lock arms in prayer for the fallen and the wounded, and have resolved to carry on a dialogue of democracy. We may not yet have all the final answers, but we already have the answer that matters most — that we’re Americans. And we’ll make it through this difficult period. We will have the last word.

Today’s resolution was just one of several events observing the attack on Rep. Giffords.  Lawmakers, staff and visitors filed through the Cannon House Office Building Rotunda in Washington to sign a Book of Well Wishes and a Book of Condolences throughout the morning.  At 1 p.m. Boehner and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) hosted a bipartisan prayer service for lawmakers in the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center.
