“Busloads” Travel to DC to Witness Swearing in of Boehner as Speaker of the House

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Speaker John Boehner was surrounded by friends, family, and supporters this week as he was sworn in as the 61st Speaker of the House – many of whom traveled by bus from the Eighth District of Ohio. As the Hamilton Journal-News put it, “Boehner has clawed his way back from the abyss and capped off an improbable comeback.  Through the combination of a tenacious personality, relentless ambition, a talent for raising campaign money, and a salesman’s gift for persuasion, the West Chester Twp. Republican has emerged as speaker of the House, only the third Ohio lawmaker ever to occupy the post.”   The Cincinnati Enquirer estimated that there were “about 500” supporters in all who make the journey from Southwest Ohio to the nation’s capital.
Family members attended a bipartisan prayer service at St. Peter’s Catholic Church near the Capitol and were in the House Gallery as Rep. Boehner accepted the Speakers’ gavel from now-Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).   Following are news reports of those who made the trip to Washington, D.C.:
  • The 61-year-old West Chester Republican – now second in the line of presidential succession – was surrounded Wednesday not only by the Republican majority that elected him their leader but by hundreds of family members, friends and supporters who watched his rise through American politics over the past two decades….As difficult as the problems the new speaker will face are, Wednesday was a day of celebration for Boehner, his wife Debbie and their two daughters, Lindsay and Tricia.  The family joined Boehner on the speaker’s podium after the speech, as did the 10 of his 11 siblings who made the trip to Washington.” (Cincinnati Enquirer, 1/6/11)
  • “Growing up as one of 12 children prepared House Speaker John Boehner for his new position, according to his older brother Bob.  The elder Boehner said their childhood in Cincinnati, Ohio, where they helped run their family bar, is why John is able to connect with people easily and build a consensus.  ‘Much like we were very young nine or ten years old cleaning a bar. You couldn’t kick customers out, you had to work with the customers and talk to them,’ Bob Boehner told CNN Chief National Correspondent John King.” (CNN, 1/5/11)
  • “John Boehner would have a sizeable crowd in Washington Wednesday to watch him be sworn in as the 61st Speaker of the House if it were only his blood relatives coming….But hundreds of others are coming as well, by plane, automobile and buses – cousins, family friends, campaign volunteers, Republican Party officials from all over Ohio, and tea party activists who supported the West Chester congressman’s ‘Pledge to America’ campaign that led to the GOP taking over the House in the November election.” (Cincinnati Enquirer, 1/2/11)
  • “A group of over 100 supporters of West Chester congressman John Boehner boarded charter buses early Tuesday morning for a long trip to Washington, D.C….By 6:15 a.m. they were ready to go, with the buses pulling out of the club house parking lot. Supporters packed for the trip, bringing large coolers filled with refreshments to avoid multiple stops along the way.  The West Chester group is one of several bus trips from throughout Ohio’s 8th Congressional District making the trip.” (KY Post, 1/4/11)
Unlike past swearing in ceremonies however, Speaker Boehner’s was marked by “austerity” as the Washington Post reported this week: “Austerity is the theme of Boehner’s ascendancy to House speaker this week, placing the start of this new Congress in stark contrast to the more lavish festivities that accompanied Democrat Pelosi’s swearing-in four years ago.”
As Republicans took control of the House this week, look for the GOP to begin implementing pillars of the Pledge to America, starting with cutting Congress’ budget and repealing the job-killing health care law.
