Private-sector job growth boost needed

Last week, we saw Ohio’s unemployment rate inch downward from 9.3% to 9.2%.  Additionally, we got news this week out of Dayton, that tax revenues showed economic growth in the area.  While positive signs are always welcome, there are still far too many people struggling to find jobs and far too many small businesses facing economic uncertainty, which is why we still have a lot more work to do. 

Upon learning that there were a few signs of growth in Dayton, Diane Shannon, an economist and city budget advisor, said it best in the Dayton Daily News when she said, “It’s good news for the region, it’s wonderful to say it’s up something.  But the real recovery won’t begin until businesses start hiring.”  The government is currently in the way of job creators and therefore blocking an economic recovery.  This is why if you look at our efforts as the new majority here in the House, our number one goal has been, and will continue to be, to assist in creating an environment where employers can once again begin to hire.

Economists across America agree spending cuts are necessary to help create a better environment for job creation in America, noting that excessive government spending is crowding out private investment, spreading uncertainty, and eroding confidence in the nation’s economy.  More than a month ago the House passed H.R. 1, a long-term funding bill that cuts billions of dollars in unnecessary government spending while keeping the government running through September.  This budget legislation, which is necessary because the previous House majority failed to produce a budget last year, will help to support job creation and economic growth.  Unfortunately, instead of following the House and passing a similar bill, Washington Democrats have thus far decided to stick with the status quo.  That’s unacceptable during these difficult economic times.

In the coming weeks and months, there will be many decisions made about our budget – about cutting programs, reducing funding, and eliminating wasteful spending.  I can assure you, that my highest priority is ensuring that any final legislation enacted to clean up last year’s budget mess is one that makes real spending cuts and boosts confidence in our economy.  It is critical that we stop spending money we don’t have.  Spending reductions are necessary to help end uncertainty and create an environment where businesses, large and small, will be able to once again create jobs.
