In Case You Missed It: New Mexican Newspaper Exposes Martin Heinrich’s False Attack
Reports That His Attack On Wilson’s So-Called Pay Raise Is Inaccurate
In a desperate attempt to cover-up his liberal tax-and-spend record, Congressman Martin Heinrich’s campaign has reached a new low by falsely claiming that Heather Wilson voted to increase her pay.
The Santa Fe New Mexican has discovered that during Wilson’s time in Congress, there was never a stand-alone vote on ‘Raises for Congress,’ therefore it’s not possible that she voted to increase her salary while in office.
As the Santa Fe New Mexican reports:
Text: “Fourteen years ago, Heather Wilson first went to Washington. A lot’s changed since then. But not Heather Wilson’s priorities. She voted herself six pay raises.” (Steve Terrell, Ad Watch: Humorous spot seeks to portray Wilson as relic of the 1990s, Santa Fe New Mexican, 9/17/12)
Accuracy: “It is true that between 2001 and 2006, the annual salaries of Congress members increased from $145,100 to $165,200. And it’s true that in the years Heinrich has been in Congress, no raises have been given to members. But the charge that Wilson voted herself six pay raises is misleading.” (Steve Terrell, Ad Watch: Humorous spot seeks to portray Wilson as relic of the 1990s, Santa Fe New Mexican, 9/17/12)
“Given that liberal Congressman Martin Heinrich has voted for higher taxes and more spending, it’s no wonder he’s decided to distort his opponent’s record,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee Spokesman (NRSC) Jahan Wilcox. “This desperate attack just adds further proof that Heinrich and his liberal agenda is wrong for New Mexico.”
