Congressman Thornberry’s Statement on Partisan Infrastructure Spending Measure

WASHINGTON – Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon) released the following statement after the House of Representatives voted last week on another partisan piece of legislation, H.R. 2, the Democratic Majority transportation and infrastructure bill.

“Traditionally, major infrastructure bills have passed Congress with bipartisan deliberation and support.  However, Speaker Pelosi and the Democratic Majority continue to force through partisan legislation that will go no further. This bill includes $1 trillion of taxpayer funding to authorize projects unrelated to surface infrastructure, like the Green New Deal, postal service reform, and oil regulations. These are not the bipartisan solutions that move the nation forward.”

Key Provisions, H.R. 2:

• Authorizes $500 billion for surface transportation projects and $1 trillion to authorize and create additional unrelated programs
• Authorizes unnecessary environmental provisions, such as Green New Deal initiatives and increasing burdensome regulations on oil and gas companies
• Lacks flexibility for state and local governments by giving large cities the same amount of funding as all rural communities combined
• Provides funding for non-infrastructure programs such as the construction of medical facilities and improving postal service vehicles
• Increases regulations on truck drivers, including a requirement that all new commercial vehicles be equipped with an automatic braking system
