Czech Republic Energy Business

The Czech energy market is evolving with European groups progressively selling their assets. In early 2013, RWE sold 100% of its shares in the gas transmission network operator Net4Gas and reorganized its gas distribution business, while Alpiq sold part of its generation portfolio. Czech group EPH is increasingly active in the energy sector with the acquisition of CEZ’s Chvaletice lignite-fired power plant. CEZ is pursuing the selection process for two nuclear units to be built at Temelin by 2025.

Meanwhile, Europe is struggling to recover after the economical and financial crisis. Despite a 0.8% recovery in 2010, primary energy production fell again by 3% in 2011, in line with the 2.5% decrease in primary energy consumption. This noticeable drop in energy demand contributed to the 4.8% contraction in the energy consumption per unit of GDP (now 37% below the world average).
