Global Warming News of the Week

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

This post comes to us from For more along these lines, visit Planetsave or some of its most popular categories: Global Warming, Science, Going Green Tips, Animals, or 10 Friday Photos.

Here’s a summary of global warming news from around. As always, feel free to click the Global Warming category above to see global warming stories we’ve written about this week in full.

Global Warming and Money

While many countries are struggling to catch up with the issues of the time, the U.S. is having more troubles than most. A new report out from the Carbon Disclosure Project shows that U.S. firms lag European competitors on climate change.

For another website I write for, I did a piece on the financial costs of global warming we are already seeing and can expect to see in the future. Of course, I think that one is worth a read.

A piece of that are the millions upon millions of people who being left homeless and jobless, and whose crops being destroyed from floods and fires related to climate change. Reuters has a good piece of its own on the 2 million people left homeless and the crop destruction in Northern India this week.

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has a funny new video and ad campaign out on the American Petroleum Institute, which has ridiculously biased reasons for opposing action to address climate change. Watch the video below. Read more on the NRDC’s blog.

What Global Warming Looks Like

Here’s another great video by the NRDC this week on “what global warming looks like.”

Kids vs Global Warming

This is a cool and inspiring one: a story on the 12-year-old founder of Kids vs Global Warming. Check that out. What were you doing at 12 years old?

Global Warming Politics

If you’ve heard anything about the upcoming climate conference in Cancun, Mexico, you’ve probably heard that hopes are not high. Top Chinese officials are trying to revive hope, it seems, or just have more faith than the rest of us in the international process and where the Cancun meeting will lead, as they recently stated that they are keen on signing a binding international climate treaty at the 2011 climate conference in Johannesburg.

While a comprehensive climate bill in the U.S. Congress is long dead, at least for awhile, hope has resurfaced that it will enact a nationwide Renewable Energy Standard (RES) this year. But more than hope, actually. A bi-partisan group of Senators are moving things forward. And there is confidence several more Republicans will get behind it. The question (see the first link in this paragraph) is if the proposed RES is anything more than business as usual.

Unfortunately, a set of Republicans have also introduced a bill “to prove that they care more about Don Blankenship’s approval than their constituents.” They’re claiming that Obama’s EPA threatens national security. As you can imagine, I could argue this one until I was blue in the face. And tons of others could as well, since there is a strong link between climate change and national security.

Lord Monckton, who I could truly call a disgrace to humanity, is a leading anti-science disinformer. Thankfully, for humanity and common sense, “A team of 21 top climate scientists have eviscerated [Lord Monckton's] Congressional testimony” on climate change now.

Climate Change Science

Here are a few more science-oriented pieces from Climate Progress as well, if you are into learning more about the scientific side of things.

  1. NSIDC director: “The volume of ice left in the Arctic likely reached the lowest ever level this month.” (following up on our focus on climate change and the Arctic from last week)
  2. Climate disruption caused by global warming driven by human emissions of greenhouse gases
  3. Two more independent studies back the Hockey Stick: Recent global warming is unprecedented in magnitude and speed and cause
