Swept Away at the Movies

Last week I was introduced to a group called Making Movies, who just happened to release their new sophomore album, A La Deriva (which means “swept away”). The group’s members (Enrique Chi – guitar and lead vocals, Brendan Culp – drums, Diego Chi – bass, Juan-Carlos Chaurand – percussion/keyboard) describe their music as psychedelic Latin.

The first single from the album, “Cuna De Vida”, was a stellar pic with its high energy and smooth vocals. This song really has a confident, commanding feel that makes you want to get up and dance. Chances are you won’t sit steal on this one. “Lo Que Quiero” is more of a slow, tropical groove with a calypso sound. The melody here is soothing, yet catchy in one breath.  “Pendulum Swing” gets your heart rate moving again with fast percussion and guitar strums. The vocals here borderline between angry and aggressive, but it fits the production well. This song is one of my favorites on the album and is one of 4 English speaking tracks on the album. The majority of the tracks are in Spanish. Much like the pendulum they sing about, their sound is chameleon like, changing at the drop of a hat. However, the band steps into each style with finesse and ease.
