10 Traits That Makes a Band Great

Music is a universal language. It binds people together from different nationalities, races and religions. It’s one thing that always seems to know just how we feel at times.

There are a lot of great local, regional and national bands that are active today. Some cover popular songs or pay tribute to well-known other artists, others write and perform their own original compositions, and some bands do both. For every band that signs a major record label deal, there are thousands of amazing independent bands that self-promote and are hard at work making a name for themselves at different venues.

Some artists have agents that book events for them. You can find out more online at Green Light Booking and other sites. Bands can be hired for corporate events, graduation parties, weddings and other special occasions. Every band is unique, but being a musician is not easy. Not every band is successful in the long run.

With that in mind, here are ten traits that make a great band:

1. Being unique.

There are a lot of bands that sound somewhat similar. Because of that, it can be hard for them to stand out and be memorable. Having a unique sound, songs or stage presence can help bands stand out in local and regional markets. Individuality is important.

2. Good chemistry.

In order to be a successful band, the band members have to be able to get along together. Their passion for their creative art should be evident when they’re on stage. Sometimes, there’s tension or artistic differences between band members. In those instances, if someone in the band is unhappy, it’s probably the best times to cut ties with them. It may be difficult, but a necessary decision for the band’s future. It’s better to have a band where every member is on the same page than having a group where people are at each other’s throats on a regular basis. A great band lasts longer when everyone in the group gets along with each other, and everyone is encouraging each other to do their best.

3. You’ve gotta have talent.

Anyone can form a band, but if the musicians don’t have the ability, those bands are usually gone very quickly. Audiences can tell if an artist is skilled or just a pretender. Singing off key or playing a guitar that’s out of tune won’t go unnoticed. Not everyone who joins a band has the talent that is needed to be part of a successful group. It’s great to have a dream of becoming a musician, but reality has to be considered.

4. Determination is key.

A lot of bands come and go, but the good bands put on great shows and remain dedicated to their craft. They play to packed houses or crowds of only a few people. They are focused on giving every audience an entertaining performance, no matter what may happen.

5. No egos allowed.

In some music genres, it’s easy for certain band members to get swelled heads. If a band is really popular, musicians can get accustomed to living the rock and roll lifestyle. However, a great band realizes that every member plays an equal role in their success. No one person is better than any other. They are also respectful of club owners, instrument techs, roadies, other bands and their fans.

6. Respect your fans.

Without fans, most musicians would never be able to do what they love for a living. Fans buy concert tickets, album and band merchandise. They are also a great source of word of mouth advertising for your band. Some bands consider their fans, friends and family, which is a good mindset to have. When fans are taking the time to talk to you at your merch booth or at a meet and greet, be polite, smile and listen to them. Treat your fans well, and they’ll keep coming back for more. They may even bring along a few friends and family members of their own to share the experience.

7. Some sacrifices have to be made.

Being an artist of any kind is never easy. Most band members forfeit time that could have been spent with family or friends to rehearse or play concerts. Some of them may miss pivotal moments in their children’s youth. Others may not be able to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries or other celebrations because they are performing. Musicians give up a lot to do what they do, but the smiles on their fans’ faces can make the effort very worthwhile.

8.Be prepared.

Every gig is going to be unique. Sometimes a show may be delayed or cancelled due to weather. Other times, a band may have to perform earlier than expected. No matter what may happen, a good band has to be prepared for anything. Staying focused and having a positive attitude is key, especially if the show isn’t going so well. Bad things happen, but there are usually far more positive and memorable moments that happen too.

9. Communicate well.

Communication is vital in any profession. Successful bands need to have good communication with their band members. If something goes wrong in a performance, they need to address the issue and usually have to find a solution quickly. They also need to be able to talk to booking agents, concert promoters, fans and many more people on a regular basis. This helps everyone stay on an even keel and can help prevent possible problems from happening.

10. Follow directions.

This applies to a lot of things. From following driving directions to a certain venue to listening to the promoter when they are given instructions about load-in times or set times, musicians need to be good listeners and follow the rules. This can mean the difference between a good show and a bad show sometimes.

These are just some of the best qualities of successful bands. Music is not an easy career. Many artists have full-time or part-time jobs and are performing on evenings or weekends because they want to. Every musician usually starts out small, with gigs that probably don’t pay much to begin with. With enough talent, determination and passion, great bands can go on to entertain crowds for years. Their music often stands the test of time and is enjoyed by many generations.
