How Cigarette Smoking is good for you? Benefits of Smoking

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Food and drug administration (FDA), Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and World Health Organization (WHO) and every medical board in the whole wide world is convinced and convincing the public that smoking is dangerous for you and it brings unnatural disease and death. Something that can be prevented. But, there is research that suggests that there are a number of diseases that can actually be prevented and controlled by smoking cigarettes.

Enhanced Cognitive Performance

Nicotine is the main ingredient of smoking and meta-analysis research has shown betterment in six aspects of performance.

  • Improvement in motor abilities
  • Attention-accuracy becomes alert
  • Better responses and reflexes
  • Improved accuracy in short term episodic-memory
  • Enhanced working memory

The medical research evidence suggests that there is a link between nicotine intake and improvement in immediate and sustained work memory. Working memory helps in reason, guidance, decision making, and behavior. When cigarette intake is replaced with nicotine, it is found to suppress cognitive impairment through a pharmacological effect on the brain activity principally activity taking in the neurons. It is speculated that nicotine may help in improving prospective memory. Smoking cigarettes are no longer associated with degrading cognitive intelligence.

Smoking can Help Psychotic Patients

People with psychotic disorders are more likely to get hooked to smoking despite the warnings on the cigarette cartridge packaging. It is believed that the impulse to smoke cigarettes comes from the intention to suppress the unpleasant symptoms of psychiatric problems. And that could be seen effective to some extent.

There is evidence that supports that belief among medical researchers that mood enhancement and better mental concentration can be acquired by patients who are suffering from depression and different forms of cognitive problems through nicotine intake. Nicotine has also been found effective in giving relief to a patient that suffers from the side effects of antipsychotic drugs. This happens because of nicotine’s effect on altering the chemistry of the brain’s reward system. The observations have been done in many psychiatric patients.

The administration of nicotine has been found useful in enhancing sustained attention among schizophrenia patients. Scientists believe that this discovery in medical research on nicotine will open new avenues to treat sensory disruption and attention deficit that schizophrenia patients suffer.

Some research done on nicotine on AHDH patients has also shown promising results to treat impulsiveness and memory deficits. It is a fact that explains the higher smoking ratio in people who suffers from this mental disorder.

Smoking Fights Obesity

The nicotine in cigarettes is a particular hunger suppressor. This observational fact was known before the discovery of the American continent by Columbus dating back to indigenous cultures. Tobacco companies targeted their marketing campaigns to women in 1920 by promoting the notion that smoking would make them thinner and therefore sexier. The advertisements and the uniqueness of the custom packaging of cigarettes made huge profits for companies.

A study that was published in a journal relating to psychology behavioral studies in 2011 stated that the fear of putting on weight again is the number one factor that prevents people from quitting smoke, second to addiction.

The relationship between smoking and weight loss is very complicated because nicotine acts as an appetite stimulant and suppressant. The act of smoking resorts people to snack less. Smokers also lose their true sense of taste for food further acting as a catalyst to curb the desire of hunger.

It is known to researchers that when nicotine is acting as an appetite suppressant, it is active in the brain’s part known as the hypothalamus.

However, no responsible doctor would ever suggest smoking as weight loss or weight control therapy given the toxicity of other ingredients of the cigarettes.

Less Knee Replacement Surgeries

It has been found through medical stats that people who smoke are less likely to go through knee replacement surgery than those who do not smoke.

Research taking place at the University of Adelaide in Australia published in journal Arthritis & Rheumatism, July edition has revealed the connection between obesity, joggers and smokers. People who regularly smoke are less likely to be morbidly obese therefore they rarely jog. Knee replacement surgery is more commonly found in people who are obese and who are joggers.

Low Risk of Parkinson’s disease

It has been found that mysteriously smokers are less likely to be found to suffer from Parkinson’s disease. It is known that it is not because of the early death of a smoker since Parkinson’s is a late age disease in most cases.

Research at Harvard University, it was the first time that revealed enough evidence to link the positive effect of smoking with Parkinson’s disease. A March 2007 study published in Neurology claimed that the protective effect of the disease deteriorates once the smoker quit smoking. The Drew a conclusion that they do not have any hint of why that happens.

Cigarette smoking has hundreds of harmful chemicals in gaseous form that is inhaled by smokers. It is advisable that you should not start smoking but this article suggests interesting facts about smoking cigarettes to people who are already smokers.
