What Makes Science Fiction so Popular?
It has long been known that science fiction is among the most beloved genres in pop culture. We see Marvel Comics and DC Comics character movies dominating the box office all the time, the Star Wars games being the most sold and many published sci-fi novels becoming so huge that they end up getting a film or a series adaptation. What makes sci-fi so popular?
Science fiction has found its place in every corner of the entertainment world. You’ll find it everywhere, in cinemas, book stores, magazine stands, even the nearest 7-Eleven. Today, we are even met by sci-fi in the gambling industry. People who visit casino sites are not only drawn to their different bonuses and the possibility to spin for free, but also the games which are set in fantasy worlds. The escapism sci-fi provides is probably the main reason why the genre is so popular.
Breaks the Pattern
With work, school and other duties, most of us follow the same pattern every day. Science fiction, which tends to be the complete opposite of our reality, or at least is packaged as such, takes us away from our daily habits and routines. The well-needed escapism lets us forget about things that weigh on our mind, and enter a more exciting universe.
When a character embarks on a journey taking him or her to a figuratively up-side-down world, it suddenly feels more epic. For instance, in the Netflix series Stranger Things, a group of kids living in a slowly dying small town get the adventure of a lifetime when a dangerous alien appears in their life, and kidnaps one of them. Their investigation takes the viewer to places he never could have imagined existed.
Futuristic and Nostalgic
When we first think of science fiction, we see everything from massive explosions and lasers in a futuristic world to someone who’s experimenting with chemistry in a garage. The adventurous side of this is just what the audience is looking for because it makes them feel like kids again. The combination of futuristic and nostalgic elements have always been widespread in the sci-fi world.
Exciting Philosophies
Still, science fiction doesn’t have to be just about explosive adventures. Sometimes, it focuses on being philosophical. A few years ago, Denis Villeneuve’s movie Arrival, became a massive hit. Yes, it contains aliens, and yes, the special effects are impressive, but the heart of the story is about communication and the very nature of human fear. Sometimes sci-fi is both adventurous and philosophical, as in Ridley Scott’s legendary film Blade Runner which, apart from the action sequences, deals with what it means to be human.
Sure, there are plenty more elements which make science fiction the pillar it is in pop culture. This article only addresses some of the main reasons.
