4 Things You Didn’t Know About Gambling

Monte Carlo Casino
The glamour and grandiosity of the Monte Carlo Casino in Monaco is world renowned. So are the taxes, or lack of. Monaco’s economy was fuelled by the country’s gambling industry in the early days. Recent efforts to diversify have seen that reliance drop, with tourism taking the top-spot. But the citizens of Monaco are not allowed to gamble and are forbidden to enter the casinos.
American Online Casino Industry
The American online casino industry has only really taken off in the last decade. Land-based gambling was only legal in Nevada, Atlantic City, and on Native American reservations before the early nineties. As DraftKings and other fantasy sports sites started to gain popularity, the online gambling industry in 2016 was worth $7 billion. A decision by the Supreme Court in 2018 left the ball in each individual state’s hand, so to speak, to decide on what their policies for gambling would be. A lot of them made moves to legalize. Based on current forecasts, by 2027, legal sports gambling will rake in at least $127 billion annually.
Fed-Ex
In 1973, Frederik Smith, founder of Fed-Ex, took the companies last $5,000 to Las Vegas. He needed to win big to save the company. Fed-Ex were in millions of debt and he needed enough to keep the company running for at least a week. Fuel the planes, deliver the packages, secure investments and stock prices. Blackjack was his game of choice. A week after landing in Las Vegas, he goes back to work with $27,000 to keep Fed-Ex running. He managed to raise $11 million soon after (not at the tables of Las Vegas) and within a couple of years the company had produced its first profit before going public and being able to deliver all your necessities without much of a hiccup since.

A hugely decorated footballer who has won La Liga eight times, the Champions League three times with Barcelona, amongst many other trophies, as well as a European Championship and a World Cup with the Spanish national team. He has business interests, owning a Spanish lower-league team called FC Andorra and is a founder of a sports and media investment group. But let’s talk about his poker skills. In 2019, Pique won €352,950 at the European Poker Tour in Barcelona. Some people are too talented.
