Elliot Page, Actor Formerly Known as Ellen Page, Comes Out as Trans

Elliot Page, the actor formerly known as Ellen Page, announced on Tuesday that he is transgender. In a candid statement posted to both Twitter and Instagram, the star of Juno and Umbrella Academy announced that he now uses “he/they” pronouns and the first name Elliot.

“I feel lucky to be writing this,” the 33-year-old explained. “To be here. To have arrived at this place.”

“I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self. I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive.”

Page first found fame with the 2007 film Juno. The indie hit earned Page an Oscar nomination for his performance as a precocious pregnant teenager. The Canadian actor, producer and activist added director to the list this year with the documentary There’s Something in the Water. The doc explores the disproportionate effect of environmental injustice on Black and First Nation communities in Canada. Page had previously been a co-host and producer on the Viceland docu-series Gaycation, a travel show with a focus on queer destinations.

Page first came out as gay in 2014, and has since married wife Emma Portner, a Canadian choreographer. Following Page’s announcement, Portner posted her own words of love and support.

“Trans, queer and nonbinary people are a gift to this world,” Portner wrote. “Elliot’s existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E.”

Stop the Hate

Page also took the opportunity to shed light on the hardships facing the trans community, which he says often fall specifically on “Black and Latinx trans women.”

He called out “political leaders who work to criminalize trans health care and deny our right to exist,” as well as “those with a massive platform, who continue to spew hostility towards the trans community.”

“You have blood on your hands,” he said of these individuals. But ultimately, he wrote that he hopes to use his fame to expand visibility and acceptance of these marginalized groups. To his trans fans, Page wrote, “I see you, I love you and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better.”
