Spotify Reveals Most-Streamed Christmas Tracks

Nothing gets us in the holiday mood like some good old and new Christmas music. Sure, it gets overplayed, but people like Christmas music because it lifts our spirits and puts us in a festive mood. And who couldn’t use some of that in 2020?

But what’s the most popular holiday song of all time? It’s hard to measure, since Christmas music is just about as old as Christmas itself. Still, Spotify recently released a list of the most-streamed holiday season tunes in the platform’s history. Here’s what it revealed.

1. Mariah Carey, “All I Want for Christmas Is You”

Will the reigning queen ever be toppled? The 1994 pop standard has become one of the biggest hits of all time, and not just in the Christmas category. Carey’s catchy classic has reached the Billboard charts every year since its original release.

2. Wham! “Last Christmas”

You may not realize that this wistful Christmas break-up song was originally written as a benefit for a 1984 famine in Ethiopia. Though George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley performed the original single, it has become a go-to Christmas hit for other artists to cover – probably because they didn’t have to pay royalties for its use. In fact, in 2019, Spotify featured about 1,200 different versions of the track, which supports to no-royalty premise.

3. Ariana Grande, “Santa Tell Me”

Ariana Grande first performed this fun holiday hit at “A Very Grammy Christmas Special” in 2014. But it could soon lose its No. 3 slot on this list to a new Ariana collaboration. That would be the viral sensation “Oh, Santa,” by Mariah Carey, featuring Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson.

4. Michael Bublé, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas”

This indelible Christmas tune first became a hit for Perry Como and the Fontane Sisters in 1951. But it is the Michael Bublé rendition that has become Spotify’s No. 4 most popular holiday song. Bublé actually makes multiple appearances on the Spotify list, including his covers of “Holly Jolly Christmas” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.”

5. Justin Bieber, “Mistletoe”

This soulful song comes from Bieber’s 2011 album “Under the Mistletoe.” Though it’s never exactly been a smash hit in the States, the single did quite well abroad, and continues to be a favorite for Spotify streamers.
